Greetings of the day,
Today I want to talk about a patient who was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of buccal mucosa. The operation was carried out, but the patient got an infection after the operation. When I first saw the patient's face, it was clearly visible that stitches were not installed properly after surgery. The first photo shows that there was swelling on one corner of the face, Pus (Peev) was coming out and there was redness all around. It was a case of a classic surgical site infection (SSI). Such infections usually occur only when there is a mistake in stitches or infection control rules are not followed properly.
In the second photo, the surrounding part of the stitches under the throat was swollen and there was a mild leakage from there. The patient was also having fever and was in great pain. We started investigating her and saw that the infection had spread to the deep tissue there. This meant that sufficient antiseptic protocols were not adopted after the operation. It was a hospital-accent infection, that is, infection occurred while in the hospital and it often occurs when there is a slight lapse in care.
In the third and fourth photos, we found the stitches' condition and inflammation in detail. The stitches were open in some places and the skin started turning black nearby. To control this situation, we had to immediately start antibiotics and dressing again and again. One thing is clear from this case that after the operation, it is not just the doctor, but the responsibility of the entire nursing staff.
Today I used this case to teach my surgeons and nursing staff how SSI is, why it happens and how can it be avoided. I showed them that if care is not taken at the time of stitches, or the sterilization is not properly, then such complications can be revealed. All the surgeon and nurses learned a lot from this case and now they are taking the Infection Prevention Protocols more seriously.
THANK YOU
