Critical But Preventable: How ICU Infections Threaten Lives Daily

in StemSocial13 days ago

Greetings of the day,

Hello friends,

ICU is a deep medical unit is a place where seriously sick patients are taken care of. Every moment is important here and a little carelessness can prove to be fatal. ICU is the most sensitive area in terms of infection. If there is a slight lapse in cleanliness, hand hygiene and care of equipment, then it can make the patient's condition even more serious.

The ICU uses devices such as ventilator, central line and urin catheters daily. These are all inventory devices, which increases the risk of infection manifold. If these devices are not cleaned on time or the dressing is missed, then systemic infection can spread in patients.

At the same time, ICU has many surfaces that are repeatedly touched such as bed railings, monitor buttons, medicines trolley, ventilator screen and door handles. All these are called high touch surfaces. If they do not disinfection on time, they can become a carrier of infection. Cleaning workers and nursing staff should clean these surfaces on time and scientifically.

Hand hygiene ie hand hygieneis essential for every person working in ICU. According to WHO, it is advisable to clean hands on five main occasions. Following these measures reduces the chances of infection. Washing hands on time using a hand sanitizer or soap is considered the first line of infection control in the ICU.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, masks and face shields are alsovery important and disposals are also very important. Discipline is very important during wearing and removing PPE because at this time there is the most risk of spreading infection.

Along with this, the proper expulsion of bio medical waste is equally important. Disposable items used every day in ICU should be thrown into their color-coded bio-medical bin. In yellow bag, fluid and organic waste from thebody, glass and sharp items in the blue bag, disposable items used in redbag andnormal garbage are added to the black bag. If the waste is not disposed of according to the correct color code, it not only increases the infection but can also risk the staff of the entire hospital.

It is necessary to do everything very thoughtfully and on time in a place like ICU. The responsibility of every person working there increases, because even a small mistake can spoil the health of a patient. If we keep in mind things like cleaning, giving medicines on time, cleanliness of hands, then the condition of many patients can be better. ICU also has a large role of science as well as experience and awareness. This is the reason that every staff there not only has to do his work well, but also maintains synergy with his colleagues. When everyone fulfills responsibility together, patients get a safe environment and the effect of treatment is also better.

THANK YOU
