Many had high hopes for the last season's league champions following numerous purchases to strengthen an already strong team. The manager was really 'backed' in the transfer window as they say.
Their first match if the season was against the newly promoted side. Everyone gave them a sweeping three points. But that was in paper. That game ended (2-0) against the champions.
People attributed the loss to early season fatigue and other new recruits yet to blend with the rest of the team. But that was not to be.
The next few games followed the same pattern. One win in five matches was the poorest run for the defending champions. That win was even a scrappy one. A (1-0) win, an own goal for that matter.
Their next game was the intercontinental match. They lost scandalously and was eliminated from the competition. Their opponent had no mercy on them as they were beaten by (4-0).
The next morning after that horrendous defeat, the manager who gave them the league last season was sacked.
