Ever feel like you’ve won the lottery? Not the money one, but the “nobody scheduled a meeting today” one?
That was me. A full work-from-home day with an agenda as clear as the canal water I ended up walking beside (just kidding, you can hardly see 10km deep into the canal). I seized that rare gift like it was the last slice of pizza at a party. Twice, actually, because one walk just wasn’t going to cut it.
The sky played its part too: grey and dramatic, like it was auditioning for an indie film. Fallen oak leaves scattered across the path like nature’s confetti, while the water mirrored everything with eerie calm. There was even a massive cargo boat silently drifting by, like the world’s slowest parade float. No crowds, no noise. Just me, my breath, and that quiet crunch underfoot.
And while Novak Djokovic wasn’t around (I imagine he’s busy being legendary somewhere NOT along my side), I was. Fully present. One foot after another, no rush, no noise, no pings from Teams.
Sometimes productivity isn’t just knocking out emails or ticking off tasks. Sometimes, it’s reclaiming time. Walking without a podcast. Noticing the symmetry of a power line’s reflection. Breathing a little deeper because you can. And because you feel the great advantage it has for your sanity.
The world didn’t stop spinning. But for a moment, it slowed down just enough to let me catch up. And honestly, that’s a win I’ll take over any virtual meeting. Or real meeting for that matter.
