Office days are usually a mix of fluorescent lighting, mild caffeine dependency, and an existential dread of back-to-back meetings. But today? Today had a plot twist.
With only half the day packed with meetings (a miracle in itself), I looked out the window, hoping for any excuse to stretch my legs. It was dry! Cloudy, sure, but not “soaked socks and regrets” cloudy. Normally, I’d drive to the park, but that eats up a precious 16 minutes of walk time round trip. And walking around the office? Unless you’re into scenic views of loading docks and forklifts, it’s not exactly inspiring.
So I turned to the digital oracle: Google Maps. One kilometer away, it promised a river. I was skeptical. One kilometer doesn’t scream “serenity now”, but curiosity beat out the skepticism. And I’m glad it did.
What I found was a calm, winding river flanked by bare trees and open fields, dotted with swans and shrouded in moody clouds. A quiet kind of beautiful, the kind you don’t get with air conditioning and Teams calls.
I didn’t just walk. I reset. And I needed that!
Moral of the story? There’s peace hiding in plain sight. All it takes is a little detour, and a willingness to trade your inbox for some real air. I’ll be back there again. Probably tomorrow, or make that next week. Tomorrow is work from home day, and I ain’t giving that up!
Because sometimes, the best part of your workday is the part where you walk away from it. Tomorrow, that will be my trusty old canal!
