Normally I chew through ten thousand before lunch, barely noticing, like some kind of background process running while life happens. Today, five thousand felt suspiciously ceremonial. Not because it’s impressive in the influencer sense, but because ten days ago I was averaging a thrilling seven hundred and fifty steps a day. That’s not a fitness routine, that’s a bathroom commute with ambition.
Recovery has a way of shrinking your ego to pocket size. Suddenly the canal looks longer, the path feels more intentional, and every step has a tiny footnote attached to it saying, don’t be an idiot. The photos say calm, blue skies, soft winter light, water behaving itself. What they don’t show is me mentally negotiating with my body like a hostile takeover. Just a bit further. Okay, that bench. Fine, that tree. Absolutely not past that corner.
The light helped. The kind of day that feels like it was personally scheduled to get you outside, not to prove anything, but to remind you that the world kept spinning while you were lying still. Sun bouncing off the water, bare trees doing their minimalist thing, long shadows stretching like they’re also easing back into movement. It all felt quieter than usual, less performative. No need to conquer the walk, just coexist with it.
Five thousand steps didn’t come with fireworks. No dramatic finish line, no internal soundtrack swelling at the end. Just a slow return home, a body that didn’t revolt, and that mildly smug feeling of having done exactly enough. The kind of enough that doesn’t ask for applause, just acknowledgment.
Tomorrow might be more, or it might not. Recovery doesn’t care about streaks or averages. Today it cared about sunshine, water, and stopping before smart turned into stubborn.
Also, apparently, five thousand steps now counts as a wild success story. Please lower your expectations accordingly.
