Amazon Doesn't Want You Buying Silver or Gold Coins with Gift Cards?

Something seems to have changed on Amazon recently. I used to be able to buy gold or silver coins with gift cards, but lately, that seems to be changing.

I wouldn't normally recommend buying gold or silver from Amazon, but in my case, I get gift cards from work, so it doesn't really matter. I don't have anything else to spend it on, so why not gold and silver, which are real money?

I found a cool 50 Sen Japanese coin I wanted. It qualified for Prime shipping, so I added it to the cart.

When I went to check out, I saw the gift card balance wasn't applied. I checked my payment method settings to make sure using the gift card was enabled, and I saw this lovely notice:

How nice of them. I'll have to experiment further and see if they'll at least let me use it on collectible coins as a workaround. Make sure you check before committing to paying, or you may be out money and having to find another use for your gift card!

In the meantime, I found another unique piece of silver it would let me purchase with it, so I'll showcase that when it arrives in the next couple of weeks.

$16.99?! Wow. That same coin goes for around ¥500 here for a clean copy. That's what... like $3 right now. But I guess that doesn't surprise me. I know a guy in Tokyo who runs a coin shop and he says he makes more money selling coins to the US via ebay than he does from all his walk-in business.

That sounds about right. If it's from a foreign country, chances are it's overpriced here. !LOL

It might be momey laundering related, you buy/steal/get giftcards and gold/silver gotta be one of those asset that you can easilly resell afterwards

Ah, I didn't think about that. That might make sense why they'd let you buy some collectibles but not most coins and rounds.

There a lower spread between silver coin buy and sell than other collectible

I gave one of these MS-60 50 Sen as a gift to a friend. I never did get the replacement to put back in my Japan silver collection. I still have the 100 Sen Phoenix. A very nice silver coin @bulliontools

Maybe one day I'll come across one somewhere other than Amazon and pick one up. They have a great design.

Come get MOONed!

My guess is that it's a lot about the tax. Like sales tax, State tax. Local Tax. Value Added Tax (VAT). Taxation without representation tax. Different taxes that over fifty different US States, Territories, Districts, etc... with different tax laws, that many cannot keep up with, which differ, from state to state. Nice Coin thought!

Hmm, maybe so. It's odd that non-coins/rounds would qualify when sales tax would still apply.
