The ripple effect recently caused by Hive-Engine experiencing reliability issues has opened my eyes. It's not any one person, token or project. The biggest concerns are vulnerability and continuity. What I once considered viable and acceptable are no longer the case.

Vulnerability
DDoS (Direct Denial of Service) attacks happen every day. When they happen to Hive-Engine and you no longer have access to your HE tokens and Swap.Hive, it becomes far more real and personal. You realize just how vulnerable what you've worked to build really is.
Continuity
I was late in hearing the news that dCity would be closing. SIM had stopped paying dividends. Curation had stopped. Conversions from Swap.Hive to HIVE via BeeSwap were suddenly stuck in limbo. Gerber, who runs these projects and is the only one with access to the wallets, was nowhere to be found. Moderators assured everyone he was aware of the issue and was working to resolve the issue with the transactions. He did make good on this, but not before a week or so had elapsed and the rumor mill started churning out ugly fantasies, like being hit by a bus. Absolutely terrible, and those who started such rumors should be ashamed!
Teetering on The Edge?
This made me pause and look back at other projects that everyone had such high hopes for:
DHEDGE
HIQ
SIM
1UP
These are just a sample. The list is far longer.
All of these projects failed, and not for any lack of trying. Some were run by just one person. Not all, but even a handful of people need the buy-in of token holders to spur on growth for the project.
As I looked around at the remaining projects, I realized most are in a very similar situation to these other projects. They're one life event or cyber attack away from being reduced to nothing.
Back to Basics
So what do you do? When you realize the token strongholds you've bought into are mostly sand and mud, and one incoming wave away from becoming nothing, there's only one logical choice for me. Getting back to the basics of Hive is what will save not only me, but all of us.
Sure, continue investing in projects. The growth is good for Hive. Temper it with fortifying your own "stronghold." Create engaging and thoughtful posts, curate others and engage with them. Build your stake on the chain, because nobody can take that from you!
Hive doesn't need more tokens. Hive needs a Renaissance. A revival of passion, a rekindling of fire. I pulled over 2200 HIVE from HE projects I invested in over the years. Now, I powered up 1,000 HIVE and will likely do the same with the rest. Hive thrives as a community, so that's what I'm doing. Getting out of HE and back into the community.
