DIY Simple Hack I Used in Sewing a Jersey Leggings

Hello friends!

Today I’m walking you through the process of how I made a leggings for my daughter.

Kids grow up so fast. That little gown turned into a top overnight, so I made this leggings to give the outfit a new look. The fabric didn’t want to sew cleanly on my basic machine, the stitches was skipping. So, I tried the hack of placing a strip of masking tape under the presser‑foot area and it solved it.

  • I cut a slim strip of masking tape.
  • Stick it on the needle plate under the presser‑foot area so it bridges the big needle hole. Snip a tiny slit for the needle. Don’t cover the feed dogs.
This acts like a temporary straight‑stitch plate so the knit doesn’t get pushed into the hole. Stitches formed cleanly after this.

PROCESS

° Fold the fabric with the stretch going around the body.(grain line)
° Lay a pair of leggings that currently fit on the fold and trace out.
° I add 0.5" seam allowance, plus 2" at the waist and hems for folding.
° Cut two mirrored pieces.

Placing the front and back pieces right sides together.
I stitch the front and back crotch curve first.
I reduce the front waist line by 1" and connect slightly to the back waist line.

I proceeds to sew the inseam.

° I open the piece so it looks like pants.
° Match the leg seams from one ankle, through the crotch, to the other ankle.
° Stitch in one continuous seam

Folding the hem of the leggings and the waist

I folded the waist by 2" because I used an elastic band of 1". While stitching I left an opening to thread in the elastic using a safety pin and after I secure the opening with a stitch to close the gap.

And I folded the hem 2 " and stitch. I make sure to stretch very slightly as I sew so the seam can flex.

And that's it! Gave the top a new life 😂 simple make, big save.

The masking tape hack is the real game changer. Got other low‑tech fixes? Tell me, I’m collecting them. See you next #NeedleWorkMonday.

The young shall grow and it's amazing to see how fast they outgrow their clothes. You did make her some lovely and fitted leggings.
I have learnt a new sewing hack, thanks to you 😃. We all do need these sewing hacks don't you think?

Yeah, they grow so fast. Of course, the hack is a time safer better than the paper sewing trick.

The paper tape is a good idea, as that skipping issue can be so stressful. The leggings look adorable on your little one, nice job!
