Remember Woolworth? : My Actifit Report Card: February 16 2026

in Actifit10 days ago

It hasn't been a hugely active day. We took a trip to a store called The Range. A great place to get just about anything you want. It reminds me of the old Woolworth stores of old. Yes, I am old enough to remember that little jem. With unplained wooden flooring, and the smell of sawdust and oil. 🤣. Alas, those days are gone.

Todays weather was a mix of sunshine and heavy showers. Getting colder with a possibility of snow showers on hilltops tomorrow night. However, I doubt if we will see any here, as we rarely do these days! 😱

Woolworth was the original five and dime store in the US. It was the equivalent of today's DollarTreee. Woolworth tried to become a discount department store in the 1960s.

They bought Kinney shoes and tried to become a shoe store. This effort evolved into Footlocker.

The name "Woolworth" was used in different countries by different businesses with different marketing strategies.

Because it was used for so many different marketing strategies is hard to associate the name to any one memory.

Nice info! I have heard of 'Five and Dime' but was unaware of the connection to Woolworth. Very interesting.
Thanks for your reply.

Excellent 5K @actifit steps my friend!!👍😄

Yes, the floor is one of my memories too. Also the smell. Indescribable but distinctive! Happy memories.

I remember Woolworth! They had the lovely fountain counter where you could order a Coke, a shake or some food and eat it there on round stools. The counter was a green with some kind of little design in it and the stools were red sparkle! I remember it well!

Good job with your 5089 @actifit steps for the day. Take care and enjoy!

I remember visiting with my grandmother as a very young boy. My mother worked behind the counter, and I recall the ceiling covered with hanging lampshades. 😀

Oh, those were the days! That same shopping center where my Woolworth was, always had an Easter Bunny the weekend before Easter, and he would pass out paper bunny ears! My dad would take us every year to get those ears. Of course, then we went and shopped in Woolworth!

Memories! Take care @davidthompson57!

I know. It was sad when that store chain disappeared.
