Why do we fear society and its reaction to changing our actions, or even to the point of changing the thoughts inside our minds? It is because we fear that these changes might become tangible actions and then face unexpected reactions from the society we live in. To reach this stage, I believe we have immersed ourselves in society and its ideas excessively, to the point that invisible chains have formed in our hands and minds that we cannot break free from.
The customs and traditions of the society we live in are not all necessarily bad, but they are, as it can be said, like a package that you buy all at once and cannot separate into parts. Therefore, the alternative is to leave the society otherwise, you will face social harassment and feel like you are black duck among yellow ducks. Hence, the solution lies in willpower and determination and the solution lies in sitting with yourself and seeing the reflections of these societal actions on us and on our lives.
The society we live in might lean towards fanaticism, sectarianism or racism. Therefore, being dragged into these actions will drain your humanity and will make you appear as a bad person in the eyes of many. Thus, following society’s actions should be selective and we should not blindly follow it.
So, we must know the ideas being promoted and understand the actions we are going to take. We should not move unconsciously with the crowd because as I mentioned these actions might be racist or might harm women or children. Therefore, in whatever society you live in you are the one who controls yourself not the society that controls you.
We must be stronger than the negative influences of society and hold on to our principles no matter the circumstances. Social pressures and negative behaviors have become clearer than ever before. Since we live in an environment where all kinds of behaviors exist, we must choose truth amid lies, choose good amid evil, and choose forgiveness amid selfishness.
The Solution
The solution lies in building self-awareness, as I mentioned, about society’s actions and seeing their reflections on all of us. Another important thing is to choose a group of good friends so they will help you be in a good community inside this bad society. Also, continuous education increases a person’s awareness and makes them more capable of dealing with others and avoiding doing bad things.
Finally, having the courage to say “no” is one of the most important tools to face criticism and mockery when we act according to our own choices, away from their bad customs and traditions.
