The school session drew to a close, and the stress of packing from her previous accommodation and applying for a different one left Anne-Marie completely overwhelmed.
She was in her 400 level, but regardless of having gone through this process four consecutive times, she never quite got used to it.
Her roommates that session had been heavenly. She was convinced they were gifts from God, sent to heal her during that period.
Anne-Marie had been mostly depressed due to family-related issues and school stress to some extent. But whenever she stepped into that room, the heavy burden weighing on her chest seemed to lift.
They would gossip about everything boys, school, work. They were each other's personal diaries.
How does someone move away from somewhere that comforting?
But this was the reality she had to face.
Most of her roommates that session had also graduated. Seeing them around was nearly impossible now, as they lived in different cities.
Fast forward to the present she decided to enter her new room with an open mind.
Things may go as smoothly as they did before, she whispered to herself.
She was the second person to move in. When she arrived, the other occupant had gone away for the weekend.
She was slightly relieved at least she could arrange her things in peace. She played music to set the mood and got on with it.
A few weeks later, the others moved in one after the other.
But the atmosphere was different not particularly friendly, just everyone in their own space, fiddling with their phones.
Anne-Marie hoped things would get better. They did not.
She had just returned from class one evening when she noticed her locker was slightly open. Her provisions were missing. Some had been emptied completely, some packets were left behind for her to throw in the bin.
Her heart raced as she whispered quietly —
"I am in trouble."
