The social belief of I owe nobody nothing is one belief that has gradually landed us into a reckless society. It would not be an overstatement to say that it has negatively influenced our present day world. To the extent that it's now generally perceived as a norm. Which invariably has caused a high level of irresponsibility in most relationships, families, schools, work places, and the society at large. Sometimes I sit back and ponder over how we got to this level of irresponsibility.
Everyday you hear “I owe nobody this, I owe nobody that” under the guise of “I am me and own my life”, which has caused a lot of people to act in “I don't care attitude“. This, no doubt, has led to so many broken relationships. The truth is, any relationship that lacks mutual respect is bound to hit the rock. You owe people respect. A person who lacks good character can hardly make a good leader at whatever capacity, because great leadership calls for accountability. That is what a leader owes the people.
Yes, we own our lives but owe people love, we owe people respect. Of course, we owe people empathy. We owe people good character, we owe people regards, as well as great leadership and accountability. But unfortunately, society has changed the narrative through misinterpretation. That is why some people show little or no care towards others. You see an accident victim who needs to be urgently taken to the hospital for treatment. But what do you see? People with their phones or cameras videoing the helpless victim with less regards to empathy on how to save the person's life. Just so they could be the first to break the news on the social space. What!!! Again I ask, how did we get here?
So many younger people do things because they see others doing it. They conform with the majority, not having the mind of theirs. They feel they're left out if they act contrary to public opinion. To protect them from such beliefs, I'd first help them build their confidence so that they'd be able to make right and informed decisions, not to follow the crowd. Because, a person with a strong positive mind would not mind standing alone to do the right thing . It begins with showing compassion where others disregard it to seek social validation.
However, resisting the pressure of standing alone, not to conform with societal demands isn't an easy task. But as one who has decided to stand my ground having come to the realization of who I am, I set boundaries based on my personal core values. I intentionally associate with people with like minds, and accept the fact to live with what I can't change, to protect my peace.
