His shoes were tossed across the room. His shirt was half buttoned to his waist. His disheveled hair waffled, even though no breeze flowed.
Junior sat stone-faced; unapologetic; and disturbingly unconcerned about his current financial status.
Before Marvin, Sr. could continue berating his son, he spied the familiar, official-looking paper laying on the coffee table. As an apartment manager, resolving eviction notices were part of his daily routine.
He lunged forward, snatching the paper from the table. His eyes scanned the bold lettering, expecting the standard corporate logo of the downtown high-rise where Junior chose to live under protest from them.
It was not an eviction notice. It was an asset liquidation decree from the Ministry of Linear Time.

"All my friends took the offer. Seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime deal." Junior smiled wryly. He paused, thinking. "Well, it seemed like a good deal at the time. I've tried calling my roommate and several other friends, but no answer since yesterday."
Marvin Sr. pressed his lips tight, then heaved a heavy sigh. He shook his head violently.
"And, to think I wasted good money paying for a four-year college degree. And this is what I get for my sacrifice! If they were handing out degrees for stupidity, you'd be at the front of the line, together with the rest of your buddies.
Junior sat staring blankly at the television for a moment as if attempting to reconcile together the various pieces of the situation. He wasn't thinking as he looked back at his mother for assistance.
Shaking, Alice attempted to intervene. "Marvin, our son requires room, board, and gentle reassurance right now. You were young once. Children make mistakes. I know Junior regrets this latest one."
The next moment, Junior started to speak; to thank his mother for her understanding and unwavering love.
But he couldn't get the words out. He began to weave back and forth as if extremely exhausted. Searching for a nearby couch pillow, he reached for it, but missed it altogether.
He desperately wanted to answer, but he couldn't grasp the concept of his thoughts.
As he started to respond, his fingers began to blur into translucent static. The half-buttoned shirt suddenly flattened against the couch cushions, completely empty. His face dissolved as if fractured glass.
Right before their eyes, Junior was gone, leaving behind only the faint scent of ozone and thirty-six months of silence.
From the bottom step, Mrs. Ludwick gasped, clutching the banister before fainting.
