Is Nana Watching Over Me? | LMAC FreeStyle Collage No. 174

LMAC-FreeStyle-No174-NanaWatchingOverMe.jpg

I heard it once. And only once. The person's voice many revere as their anchor. The love of their lives. The protector. The giver of hugs and kisses.

Their Grandmother.

And, they come in all sizes; shapes; and colors.

The one thing they have in common is unconditional love for their children's children. The infectious smiles that erupt just by the anticipation of a visit. Remembering your birthdays with greeting cards and gifts.

Interacting with you in numerous ways, such as filling a void you may feel you need in your life, such as a confidant when you may not want to confide in a parent. Or simply, emotional support. And can't forget about the leniency and shield you may require that parent protest.

They are willing to learn all about your life activities and feelings about life. So many parts they play in your life that it's difficult to pinpoint just one aspect that they can influence.

Oh, if only I knew that others have experienced. I'm told it's like imagining you're gliding on the wings of a dove. I sat many days, months, years wondering what it would be like. How would I feel. And how would I react to unconditional love.

If only.

And there she was in the background all the time, hesitant to reach out for fear of rejection.

If only parents could foresee what estrangement does to children, perhaps they would reconsider a decision made in haste to distance themselves from their parents.

In some cases, the effects can be life changing to grandchildren. Attempting to locate ancestors and discover their history and stories may be insurmountable.

Let alone the effects of not being able to participate in the "grandmother experience".

When older, I was told that she had passed away. How can one mourn what one never truly knew or personally experienced.

For my current freestyle collage, my theme involves the concept of unconditional love by a grandparent. I present my theme in a Freestyle collage form. Although I usually include the current contest photo, I'm not required to. However, if you'd like to join in any current contest, just visit the LMAC Community page.

In preparing my theme, I discovered a lovely free-sourced image of a female of color. So striking was the image the woman portrayed that I imagined her a loving grandmother with that infectious smile.

I then utilized Canva to blend the different type images. Below are my steps in which I began with a blank, white canvas, then added layers of elements, removing backgrounds, resizing, detaching elements from their backgrounds, duplicating, colorizing, and repositioning items as needed incorporating the tools at my disposal in my Annual Pro Membership Subscription.

Oh wow, @justclickindiva! So much truth here. The picture is arresting. Even before I read the narrative I was moved.

I agree. How can a child or parent, endure an estrangement? I've seen parents do it to their children. Nothing would make me 'disown' my child. And children refuse to forgive the parent. How?

Of course, in my case I did have a father I separated from when I was 11. That wasn't my decision, but I agreed with it. When I read his obituary recently there was no mention of children. He had six. We didn't exist. It's not that I didn't forgive him. It's that he didn't care to be forgiven.

Strange thoughts you have evoked in me, my friend. I guess we never know someone's situation. Life is peculiar like that.

I'm sorry for your personal loss, that you obviously feel deeply.

Hello @agmoore. Yes, I believe the truth lies tangled in the web of family dynamics that children don't even know exist at the time. They have no choice sometimes when decisions are made that will irrevocably affect their future lives. Yes, I feel deeply about the entire circumstances surrounding me and my siblings estrangement. Combing through census records does nothing but maddens me. But I must for the sake of my children to give them as best a history as I can locate. It will never replace personal experience.

I truly can't reconcile my parents' decisions to distance themselves on both sides from their families, even refusing resources that could have made a tremendous difference on our meager upbringing. Remarkably sad.

"And children refuse to forgive the parent. How?"

One circumstance I've had to come to terms with. Abuse by a spouse that led the wife to separate and move to another state, leaving behind my then four-year mother couldn't have been an easy decision. Life in the early early 30s was difficult for rural existence. Long story short, my mother never forgave her for it because at age 13, her dad gave her away to be married. There are truly some situations that are just heartbreaking.

It is what it is. We have always taught our children that, unless there is any type of abuse involved, children need to know both sets of grandparents, no matter their relationship. PERIOD.

Thank you so much for your visit and connection with my story. Reading of your somewhat similar story made me realize that thousands of other situations have and continue to happen daily. How can your dad not have acknowledged his children even upon death? Perhaps the people left behind in his life had a hand in that.

I appreciate your engagement and support. Thanks so much for the tip. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

In my case, there was abuse. We ran from him, my mother with us in tow. He was a violent man. One would hope that in time he repented. But when I was 18 he was asked (by my brother) to provide a social security number so I could finish my scholarship applications. He never responded to that request, until June...long after the scholarship deadline had passed. Fortunately, the granting organizations had been informed of my family's situation by my guidance counselor, so they went ahead and processed the awards. That's how I went to college.

He sent me the SS number with a letter. In it he excoriated my mother. He claimed credit for my scholastic achievement "because of the genes you inherited from me." He ended the letter by saying,"Your father wishes you the best. Besides that, I have nothing more to offer you."

That was the last I heard from my father. It wasn't others who had a hand in his erasure of his children. He was the one who erased them.

Obviously, I never brought my children to meet that grandfather. Fortunately they had a lovely grandmother (my mother) and lovely paternal grandparents.

Lives are complicated. Until you're up close, I guess you never really know why people do what they do.

OMG. How thoroughly wrong that was to attempt to deny an education to one child. You know, people can see the spite in others' eyes, but can't or won't acknowledge it in theirs. Truly remarkable human behavior is. We all have a story to tell, be it good, middle ground, or sad. The hope is that we plow through it with a sense of purpose, compassion, empathy for your fellow man, and knowledge understanding what happened as best we can and vowing not to repeat the same mistakes.

In the cases of abuse, instances, distance is warranted and necessary for survival.

That's all we can do with what we have to work with. That some of us come through it is a miracle in itself. Take care.
