She felt strangely safe among the coins. But her thoughts kept telling her that the coins belonged to someone.
Perplexing, but not a single paper dollar ever appeared.
As she walked and gathered coins, the metal pile grew too big for her ten small fingers to balance. After a while, the coin tumbled from her hands onto the pavement with sharp, hollow thuds.
Locking her thumbs didn't help. The coins edges though round, cut deep. She wakes, sweating and weary, her fists clenched tight. Sitting on the edge of her bed, she stares at her bare palms. The sensation of heaviness with a phantom ache tires her heart and mind.
I don't need money, she repeatedly tells herself. My parents provide more than I need. Why are the coins laying there for me to just pick them up. Why are they haunting me? she wondered. She confided in no one thinking the money was a bad omen. But from what or where, she desperately wanted to figure out.
The nightmares continued. During that next week, Monica devised a plan to beat the weight.
She decided that she would figure out what to do with them later. For now, she needed a more efficient way to collect them.
She chose her yellow apron dress, the one with the wide, deep skirt where she could bunch up into a makeshift sack. Laying the dress on the edge of her bed, she fell asleep, telling herself this is the dress I will wear while collecting the coins.
It worked. She held the hem of her dress tightly. Thousands of copper faces pressed hard against her knees. Although heavy, she didn't drop a single coin before she woke.
That piece of the puzzle solved, Monica thought tirelessly about what to do with them. The next time I dream of the coins, I'll buy myself a pile of some rock candy. She smiled, knowing her mother didn't allow the rock candy due to her delicate teeth. And, she'd buy enough for all her friends.
She didn't have to wait long.
Two night later, after gathering the coins, she dragged them and herself down the block to Mr. Morrison’s corner market. The dress was nearly torn from the weight of the coins. She stepped inside, dragging the hem of her dress.
Her hands shook as she dumped the coins on the floor, then began scooping them up. She turned and walked towards the counter. Fascinated, Mr. Morrison watched Monica go back and forth from the counter to the floor.
Done setting the pile of coins on the counter, she turned to Mr. Morrison with a serious expression.
"These coins I found in the street. I'd like a strawberry soda and ten bags of rock candy. One bag for me; the rest for my friends. Place mine in a separate bag along with the soda."
Horrified, Mr. Morrison stared at the items on the counter, then at Monica. "What game are you playing, girl," he hissed. "There are no coins here, only rocks.
"No. You're mistaken. I collected them myself. Look again. They are an assortment of half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies."
Mr. Harrison stared again at the counter, this time with heavy, tired eyes. As though transfixed, he didn't laugh or call her crazy. He reached out and touched the air above the counter. Monica watched as he lowered his head. This time, the rocks transformed to heavy silver coins that hadn't been there a moment ago.
Confused, Monica's head jerked as she backed away from the counter. Her jaw dropping as Mr. Harrison’s wrinkled hand scooped up a pile of coins, extended his hand toward her and began.
"These coins are not for you to spend on childish things such as soda and rock candy, child," he whispered. "This change belongs to the ghosts of the dreams you broke."
Mr. Harrison swept the coins into an old jar. He looked at her with eyes that had seen too much.
"Every coin here is a meal a starving child never ate," he said.
"Every dime is a brick of a home someone lost."
"You can't buy candy with the weight of the world's pain."
Monica stared for a long moment at her yellow skirt, thinking, suddenly feeling the burns. The coins were never meant to be a personal fortune. The dream was a future delivery, not a bank account to horde money she didn't need.
She woke, refreshed, and ran downstairs to breakfast. "I've had an awakening or sorts," she began.

Without a word, mom and dad glanced from one to the other, nodded, then smiled broadly.
That night, she returned her yellow dress to the closet, hopped into bed, and slept soundly without hearing a single clink of metal.
Monica didn't know or understand why, but accepted that the bad omen of her nightly terrors were meant for good to transform her attitude into a lifelong calling. Her hands grew bigger, always open to help others.

My vision for this current mixed media project was to create a truly abstract version of my interpretation of jagged thoughts that involved coins during dreaming. I wanted the coins to represent an idea. The flowers in my design represent the various coins.

I utilized Canva, my design program, to blend the different type images. I leave with you my procedures which began with a blank, white canvas. I then added layers of elements to blend the images.

You know, you are right @kemmyb. Not every dream or nightmare is a bad omen. Some have life lessons if we can figure them out. I've had recurring dreams and nightmares since childhood that I still can't understand the meaning. Probably never will.
I will tell you though that the story was from a recurring dream I had starting in my teens and continued for several years until I finally figured it out. I didn't have anyone in my dream to direct or provide a hint as to what I was supposed to do with the silver. I always wondered why my childhood was wrought in poverty while dreaming of finding coins that could help? That was my dilemma. Why not provide me money in real life to help. I realized it wasn't money in real life I needed but a change in attitude and how I viewed money to hoard wealth.
