People who are into crime actually weigh both sides of it before venturing into it, and most times, the favourable side outweighs the side that comes with punishment. Anytime they want to think deeply about the outcome of the side that comes with punishment, which is the failure of the crime, they end up using the phrase, "Life is all about risk, bro."
Oh yeah, I've seen myself in this situation many times, though not on a serious criminal level, but in actions that, if they go wrong, I would be punished greatly by the law of nature. Most of the time, I've bought into the idea that "life is all about risk" and avoided thinking about the punishment that might affect me severely.
A typical example is how people go to the scene of a fallen fuel tanker to scoop fuel, even though they know that the punishment isn't just by mere law but a natural one, because a single spark of fire can wipe out everyone within a second. People know about this, but they ignore the potential consequences, call it a risk, and go ahead anyway.
Some months ago, I saw a clip of this on social media where a tanker fell on a road lane that was higher than the others, and the fuel was pouring down like rain from the clouds. People were fetching the fuel as it rained down. Just a spark from metal objects could take away their lives in an instant.
When it comes to human-enforced punishments meant to discourage crime, these laws are very effective in many aspects too. However, people still like to take the risk, hoping they don't become victims of the punishment. But one thing is certain: in one way or another, they're going to get caught someday, and by then, their minds would have already been made up to accept whatever comes their way.
This makes society wonder these days whether the punishments for these crimes are still effective because it looks like many years in prison and even death sentences are no longer effective deterrents.
Some months ago, there was a trending story about a man who took money from the company he was working for, or let me say, stole from the company. He got caught and was given the option to return the part of the money he had not yet spent and also repay the amount he had already spent so he could go free, or spend the rest of his life in prison while keeping the money. The man decided to keep the money and spend his life in prison.
So, do you see how hardened these people can be? I'm very sure that he weighed his actions before embarking on stealing the company's money. It could be that he had already established profitable investments with the money for his family to continue managing while he wasted his life in prison, or perhaps he used the money to clear a huge debt hanging over his family. So, he weighed both sides and saw the punishment as something worth experiencing...afterall, life is all about risk
