I don't know about you, but as science indicates, our brains are programmed to be lazy, and it's no small matter. It was designed to save energy in times when food scarcity and difficulty in obtaining it made spending energy on thinking a bad idea for survival.
Nowadays, for many people, the amount of food they can get is no longer a problem, so the brain could take advantage of this situation and think a bit more. But things aren't that simple. Let's say it's in our DNA, and it's something we can't change just because we want to.
What we can do is train our brain, after all, it's an organ, and if it's not exercised, it ends up atrophying. Just look at politicians! Jokes aside, what's true is that if we find easier and more efficient ways to consume energy, we'll always prefer the easy way, and this could be reflected in language learning.
We have the example of Americans, and please don't be offended, it's not a criticism, just an empirical observation. As English is the predominant language for business and politics, few have taken the task of learning a second or third language seriously. After all, wherever they went, there were always people who would understand English, precisely because it's the dominant language worldwide.
This same thing could start happening in the rest of the world: the ease and comfort of using instant translation software might activate the lazy brain, and people might stop making an effort to learn languages.
In theory, translation done by an artificial intelligence system would be more reliable than human translation, which could have bad intentions and translate incorrectly on purpose. But the problem I see is that I don't know to what extent a program would be able to read the subtleties of spoken language, where even the inflection of the voice matters, not to mention the connotations of idioms specific to each language.
Sometimes even speakers of the same language can't understand each other perfectly, like when an Argentine and a Chilean try to converse... or try to. Not for nothing was an Argentine-Chilean dictionary published!
But what worries me is being dependent on technology that could fail, like when there are massive and long power outages, and without the ability to understand other languages, we'd be in a kind of modern Tower of Babel, where we wouldn't understand the rest of the world, and only countries that share a language could communicate, and even then, there could be confusion.
I can't help but recognize that I fell into the trap of one-click translation, and my brain became lazy, and instead of translating myself and practicing my English, I delegated it to an artificial intelligence assistant that makes me less intelligent.
El cerebro perezoso
No sé ustedes, pero tal como indica la ciencia, nuestros cerebros están programados para ser perezosos, y no es una cuestión menor, se diseñó para ahorrar energía en tiempos en los que la escasez y dificultad de conseguir alimentos hacía que gastarla en pensar fuera una mala idea para la sobrevivencia.
En la actualidad, para muchas personas ya no es un problema la cantidad de alimentos que pueden obtener, por lo que el cerebro podría aprovechar esta coyuntura y pensar un poco más.
Pero las cosas no resultan tan sencillas. Digamos que está en el ADN y es algo que no podemos cambiar por el solo hecho de desearlo.
Lo que si podemos hacer es entrenar al cerebro, después de todo es un órgano y si no se ejercita, se termina atrofiando, sino fíjense en los políticos!
Bromas aparte, lo que sí es cierto es que si encontramos manenas más fáciles y eficientes en relación al consumo de energía, siempre preferiremos la forma fácil, y esto podría verse reflejado en el aprendizaje de idiomas.
Tenemos de ejemplo a los estadounidenses, y por favor no se ofendan, que no es una crítica, tan solo una observación empírica. Al ser el idioma inglés el predominante para negocios y política, son pocos los que se tomaron en serio la tarea de aprender un segundo o tercer idioma.
Después de todo, fueran a donde fueran siempre había quienes entenderían inglés, justamente por ser el idioma dominante a nivel mundial.
Esto mismo podría empezar a pasar en el resto del mundo: la facilidad y comodidad de utilizar software de traducción instantánea tal vez ocasionaría que el cerebro perezoso se active y las personas dejen de esforzarse.
En teoría, la traducción realizada por un sistema de inteligencia artificial sería más fiable que la traducción humana, que podría tener malas intenciones y traducir incorrectamente a propósito. Pero el problema que veo es que no sé hasta qué punto un programa sería capaz de leer las sutilezas del lenguaje hablado, donde incluso la inflexión de la voz importa, sin mencionar las connotaciones de los modismos específicos de cada idioma.
A veces, incluso los hablantes del mismo idioma no se entienden perfectamente, como cuando un argentino y un chileno intentan conversar... o intentarlo. ¡No en vano se publicó un diccionario argentino-chileno!
Pero lo que me preocupa es ser dependiente de una tecnología que podría fallar, como cuando hay apagones masivos y largos, y sin la habilidad de entender otros idiomas, estaríamos en una especie de Torre de Babel moderna, donde no entenderíamos al resto del mundo, y solo los países que comparten idioma podrían comunicarse, e incluso así, podría haber confusión.
No puedo evitar reconocer que caí en la trampa de la traducción con un clic, y mi cerebro se volvió perezoso, y en lugar de traducir yo misma y practicar mi inglés, lo delegué a un asistente de inteligencia artificial que me hace menos inteligente.
