Hello, dear Holos & Lotus community!

There is something special about a corner made for reading. It does not need to be large, luxurious, or perfectly decorated. Sometimes all it takes is a comfortable armchair, a window, a small table, and a few books waiting nearby. The beauty of such a place is not necessarily in what we see, but in what it allows us to leave behind for a while. Outside, the world continues moving at its usual speed, but inside this little space, time seems to ask us to slow down. It becomes a quiet boundary between everything that demands our attention and everything we rarely have time to hear within ourselves.

I imagine a reading corner in the late afternoon, when the light coming through the window begins to soften and the room takes on a warmer atmosphere. Perhaps there is an old armchair with a blanket resting over one side, a wooden floor with a few books stacked beside it, and a shelf filled with stories that have already traveled through other hands. Nothing in the scene needs to be perfect. In fact, I think a few signs of use make it more beautiful. A book with folded pages, a worn cover, or a cup left on a nearby table tells us that someone has been there, that this is not merely decoration but a place that has been lived in.

For me, books have always represented a particular kind of escape. Not the kind that means running away from life, but the kind that gives us enough distance to look at it differently. We can open a book while sitting in exactly the same chair where we began our day, and suddenly find ourselves walking through another city, another time, another person's memories, or even another version of ourselves. We do not have to pack a suitcase, buy a ticket, or cross a border. A few pages can be enough to take us somewhere else. That is one of the quiet miracles of reading: the body remains still while the mind begins to travel.

Perhaps that is why a reading nook feels different from an ordinary chair placed in a room. It has an intention. Someone has created that space because they wanted somewhere to pause. Maybe it was arranged consciously, choosing the chair, placing the books within reach, leaving a lamp nearby. Or perhaps it happened naturally over time, until one day the person realized that this was the place where they always went when they needed a little silence. We often build our refuges without realizing it. A certain corner becomes ours because it gives us something the rest of the house cannot offer: permission to disconnect.

We live surrounded by noise, and I am not talking only about sounds. There are messages, notifications, responsibilities, opinions, schedules, unfinished tasks, and an endless stream of information asking us to look, answer, decide, and move on. Even when a room is completely silent, our minds can remain crowded. That is why having a physical place where we can step away from all of that can be more important than it seems. A reading corner is not simply a place for books. It can become a small declaration that our attention also belongs to us.

There is something almost intimate about sitting alone with a book. Nobody needs anything from us for those few minutes. We do not have to explain where we are going or why we have chosen to remain quiet. We simply turn a page. Sometimes we read carefully, following every sentence. Other times our eyes move over the words while our thoughts wander somewhere else. And that is fine too. A refuge does not always require us to do something productive. Sometimes its greatest purpose is simply to give us permission to be still.

I think many of us have experienced that feeling of reading a sentence and suddenly stopping because it says something we did not know how to express ourselves. A book can sometimes put words where we only had feelings. It can accompany us during difficult seasons, make us laugh when we need it, or introduce us to ideas that change the way we see the world. Perhaps this is why the books we remember are rarely remembered only for their stories. We remember where we were when we read them, what we were going through, who we were at that particular moment. The book becomes connected to the place, and the place becomes connected to a part of our life.

A reading corner also reminds me that solitude and loneliness are not the same thing. Loneliness is the feeling that nobody is there when we need connection. Solitude can be different: it can be a space we choose, even for a short while, because we need to reconnect with ourselves. Sitting alone beside a window with a book can be a form of company. The author is there through the pages, the characters move through our imagination, and our own thoughts finally have room to breathe. Sometimes we do not need more voices around us; we simply need a quieter conversation with ourselves.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about these spaces is that they do not ask us to become someone else. We can arrive tired, distracted, happy, worried, or simply curious. The chair does not judge us. The books do not demand that we have all the answers. The window does not care whether our day has gone according to plan. For a little while, everything can remain exactly as it is. We can sit down, open a book, and allow the world to continue without us. Then, when we finally close the pages and stand up, perhaps nothing outside has changed. But something inside us may have become a little quieter.

I like to imagine that every reading nook carries the stories of the people who have rested there. Maybe someone once sat in that armchair after a difficult day and found comfort in a familiar novel. Maybe another person discovered an idea that changed an important decision. Perhaps a child learned to love stories in that same corner, or someone simply spent a rainy afternoon watching the drops slide down the window while turning pages slowly. We may never know those stories, but that does not make them less real. Spaces absorb traces of the lives that happen inside them, and sometimes those traces are what make a place feel alive.

Maybe that is what a refuge really is. It is not necessarily a place where nothing bad can reach us. It is a place where, for a little while, we can decide how we want to receive the world. A reading nook gives us that possibility. We can close the door, lower the noise, pick up a book, and let our thoughts travel somewhere beyond the immediate moment. We can return to ourselves without needing to go anywhere. And perhaps that is why a simple chair beside a window can become so important: it creates a small border between the chaos of the day and the intimacy of thought.

So, if you have a reading corner at home, perhaps today you could look at it with new eyes. If you do not have one, maybe there is a chair, a balcony, a window, or another small place that could become your own refuge. It does not need to look like the reading rooms we see in beautiful photographs. It only needs to make you feel that you can stay there for a while without having to hurry. A few books, a little light, and some quiet may be enough.

Because sometimes the places that protect us are not the ones with walls around them. They are the ones that give our minds permission to breathe.

¡Saludos @leydilaura!
