Hello, another day, another coin. Today I would like to show you a coin which I can honestly call my favourite piece from the German Empire period, 1871 to 1918. This is not some random coin that landed in the album only because it is silver with a nice fineness. Here something just worked. Big denomination, Prussia, strong and beautiful design, and this whole heavy mood of the old German state. I bought this coin online. Enjoy!
Prussia 5 Marks 1901, 200 Years of the Kingdom of Prussia
This is a 5 Marks coin from 1901, struck to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of Prussia. And I will say it straight away, for me this is one of the best coins from the whole German Empire. I will not pretend that I am cold about it, because I am not. This coin really does something for me. We have big silver, a very nice weight in hand, and a subject that is not pulled out of nowhere. Prussia was not some small place nobody cared about. It was a state which later had a huge impact on Germany and, in general, on a good part of Europe. On the coin we have the dates 1701 and 1901, so the beginning of the Kingdom of Prussia and the moment when this state was already a proper power inside the united German Empire. It is a bit of a strong showpiece, no point pretending otherwise. It was meant to say that Prussia has history, power and some kind of serious continuity. And honestly, you can see it. This is not just another five marks with one ruler’s head and that is it. This is more of a commemorative coin, one that even without opening a catalogue looks more serious straight away. Maybe a bit pompous, maybe a bit too state heavy, but for this period it fits. Germans at that time liked to show strength and order, and this coin does exactly that without begging for attention. You put it in your hand and you know this is not small change.
On one side we have two busts. Frederick I with the date 1701 and Wilhelm II with the date 1901. And for me this is the strongest part of this coin, because we have here a short version of Prussian history on one silver round. The beginning of the kingdom and then the emperor who, two hundred years later, is already sitting on top of this whole huge German machine. Frederick looks more classic, calmer, almost like the beginning of the story. Wilhelm II is already a completely different thing. Helmet, uniform, eagle above his head and straight away you get this Prussian military feeling. Not everyone has to like it, wiadomo, but as a coin it really works. On the other side we have a big imperial eagle, the inscription DEUTSCHES REICH, the year 1901 and the denomination FÜNF MARK. The reverse is strong and very readable. The eagle has a lot of detail, the wings fill the field nicely and the whole thing looks how a big silver coin from the German Empire should look. No messing about, no pretending to be soft. This is a coin that says, "There must be a state, there must be an eagle, there must be silver. My example looks really pleasant. This is not a coin where I have to tell myself that maybe the condition is weak, but at least the history is nice. Here the history is nice and the coin itself also looks good. I think I like it because of its heavy, concrete feel. This is not some light, sweet and colourful subject. This is Prussia in silver. Hard, concrete and a bit cold, but this is where the whole charm sits. In a collection from 1871 to 1918, such a piece is a strong point for me. It does not have to be the rarest one to make me happy. Sometimes a coin just hits your taste and that is it. This one hit mine perfectly.

Witam, kolejny dzień, to kolejna moneta. Dziś chciałbym wam pokazać monetę, którą spokojnie mogę nazwać moją ulubioną sztuką z okresu Cesarstwa Niemieckiego 1871 do 1918. Nie jest to przypadkowy krążek, który wpadł do albumu tylko dlatego, że był ze srebra fajnej próby. Tutaj naprawdę coś zagrało. Duży nominał, Prusy, mocny i piękny projekt i ten cały ciężki klimat starego niemieckiego państwa. Monetkę kupiłem w internecie. Zapraszam!

Jest to 5 marek z 1901 roku, wybite z okazji 200 lecia Królestwa Prus. I od razu powiem, że dla mnie jest to jedna z najlepszych monet z całego Cesarstwa Niemieckiego. Nie będę tutaj udawał obojętnego, bo akurat ten krążek naprawdę mi się podoba. Mamy duże srebro, bardzo przyjemną wagę w ręce i temat, który jest konkretny, a nie wymyślony na siłę. Prusy to nie było jakieś małe państewko bez znaczenia. To był organizm, który później mocno wpłynął na całe Niemcy i w sumie na sporą część Europy. Na monecie mamy daty 1701 i 1901, czyli początek Królestwa Prus i moment, w którym państwo już dawno było wielką siłą w zjednoczonym Cesarstwie Niemieckim. Trochę taka moneta mocno pokazowa. Miała powiedzieć ludziom, że Prusy mają swoją historię, wielką władzę i ważną ciągłość. I powiem szczerze, że to widać. Nie jest to zwykłe pięć marek z jednym portretem władcy, tylko coś bardziej pamiątkowego. Taki krążek, który nawet bez katalogu od razu wygląda poważniej. Może trochę pompatycznie, może trochę za bardzo państwowo, ale przy tej epoce to akurat pasuje. Niemcy wtedy lubili pokazywać siłę i porządek, a ta moneta robi to bez większego proszenia się o uwagę. Po prostu leży w ręce i wiadomo, że nie jest to drobnica.
Na jednej stronie mamy dwa popiersia. Fryderyk I z datą 1701 i Wilhelm II z datą 1901. I to jest według mnie najmocniejszy element tej monety, bo mamy tutaj taki skrót pruskiej historii na jednym srebrnym krążku. Początek królestwa i cesarz, który sto lat później siedzi już na samej górze tej całej ogromnej niemieckiej machiny. Fryderyk wygląda bardziej klasycznie, spokojnie, prawie jak sam początek opowieści. Wilhelm II już zupełnie inaczej. Hełm, mundur, orzeł nad głową i od razu jest ten pruski wojskowy klimat. Nie każdemu musi się to podobać, wiadomo, ale numizmatycznie robi robotę. Na drugiej stronie mamy dużego orła cesarskiego, napis DEUTSCHES REICH, rok 1901 i nominał FÜNF MARK. Rewers jest mocny i bardzo czytelny. Orzeł ma dużo szczegółów, skrzydła dobrze wypełniają pole monety i całość wygląda tak, jak powinna wyglądać duża srebrna moneta z Cesarstwa Niemieckiego. Bez cudowania, bez udawania delikatności. Ma być państwo, ma być orzeł, ma być srebro i tyle. Mój egzemplarz wygląda naprawdę przyjemnie. Nie jest to moneta, przy której muszę tłumaczyć sobie, że stan może słaby, ale historia fajna. Tutaj i historia jest fajna, i sama moneta wygląda dobrze. Lubię ją chyba właśnie za ten bardzo ciężki klimat. To nie jest jakiś lekki, miły, kolorowy temat. To jest Prusy w srebrze. Twarde, konkretne i trochę zimne, ale w tym właśnie siedzi cały urok. W kolekcji z lat 1871 do 1918 taka sztuka moim zdaniem robi za mocny punkt. Nie musi być najrzadsza ze wszystkich, żeby cieszyć najbardziej. Czasem moneta po prostu trafia komuś w gust i już. Ta trafiła w mój idealnie.
