goofing off in the thrift store
This is my post for #freewriters 2953 prompt raw sewage hosted by @mariannewest
Every summer, around August, what we call rolling grass dies off. When it does this it floats to the top and looks and smells like raw sewage. Last year my sister drove over to Long Point to check out if she wanted to camp there. She came back so mad, telling me whoever dumped all that raw sewage into the river should be fined. I tried to tell her what it was, but she said I was wrong, she knows what shit looks and smells like. Later she tried to tell my husband that they had a sewage spill at Long Point, he laughed at her, and told her it is what we call Bull Grass, it is when the rolling grass floats to the top and dies. I am not sure she believed him either.

At the time I did not know what I would use this thing for, but I knew I had to buy it, it was at a thrift store. Today we needed to change the line on one of the poles, and this thought came to me. The tip of the shaft bends up to hold something on it.

I wondered if it would hold a spool that the line comes on? I took an old spool and stuck it on "the whatever it is". I tilted the tip to hold it in place. The spool was loose, so I stuck a stick in the end of it. It was a perfect fit.

I tied the line to the spool, and my sister cranked the line from the reel to the spool. We put a new reel on the rod and set the tension on "the whatever it is" and reeled the line onto the new reel. "Whatever it is" works great for changing your fishing line. Could it be made for this?

This is what the side with the crank looks like. Let me know if you know what it is. I tried the google lens and could not find anything that matched it.
