Nectar for breakfast, and more June #macros

in PHOTOGRAPHY [DAC]7 days ago (edited)

Greetings, Hiveans. I upload my fresh #macro captures and write down this blog from my village place - I plan to spend here the next two months, so probably there will be more and more and even more #macro content in my blog. Beware 😎

I will start with this one. Thistle flowers attract me very much - especially when decorated with an insects of any kind. This moth on the thistle flower was the 1st one to greet me here; the thistle hasn't fully opened yet, so the petals have this funny curvature (well, I think that's the reason why).

What we have here... I spotted a dead fly carcass in the tall grass — and (not without a conscious thought) moved it to the veranda floor, right next to an ants trail... Less than five minutes later, ant scouts discovered it, soon followed by foragers. I was ready with my camera and snapped two dozen shots, observing their efforts. As you can see, the ants were working hard! I didn't sort all the captures yet and didnt delete the unsuccessfull takes, here are just three captures from this set (and I'll probably provide a few more later, when I sort out the best ones).

Also, I found some oranges. A handful of tiny, microscopic-sized oranges...

...ok, I am kidding -- it is fungi! Name is: Lycogala epidendrum, quite a mess find; absolutely inedible and a bit scary (no good rumors abouts its medicinal qualities, quite on the contrary.)

I took a dozen shots and will keep them for another post, to show you what will happen with it later.

And the last find to round my post, quite a curious one.

This is not a fungus to be precise it appears to be a slime mold from the genus Stemonitis. (Simply called a "chocolate tube slime" for its cylindrical fruiting bodies). They are not rare, often pop-up on decaying wood. Intresting fact to know that _Stemonitis_ is harmless to plants, animals, and wood (!), as it feeds on bacteria and other microorganisms but not decomposes the wood as fungi used to.

At first, this single-celled amoeba-like organism looks more noticeable, but much less spectacular - like a colored spit of yellow or pale orange, consisting of blister-like eggs... as they develop (the hair-esque stem grows) the color changes to brown and then it becomes impossible to notice such a colony at the background of a tree bark until you kneel down and look at it from a hand distance.

(And thats how I discovered it: I just explore the trumps at my place, and keep hopes to find anything )))

Long live biodiversity!
