Today and for this weeks prompt id go with the 2nd option/ question . Do you think working from home will improve your work-life balance? How?
Everyone talks about working from home these days and i understand why to be honest, it comes with more rest, less stress, more time for yourself. Especially if you’ve ever worked in Lagos or any mega city, the idea is exhilerating and i completely understand to be honest as someone who has worked in a mega city. It is not easy working soley 9 to 5 from the office.
The first thing anyone will tell you is the obvious transportation or traffic problem. If you’ve lived that Lagos life, you already know, waking up 4 to 5am just to beat traffic, only to still get stuck in it, if you are unlucky sometime. whether it’s Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki-Epe Expressway, or even inside mainland routes like Yaba to Ikeja, that commute alone can drain half your energy before work even starts. You wake up before day breaks and once you get to the office its bright and shiny. Now imagine removing that completely. No danfo/bus stress, no Uber surge frustration. You literally gain back 3–5 hours of your day. That’s not small. That’s time you can sleep, think, read, or just be in your own space.
Then again there’s the mental energy factor, Lagos or any mega city is loud physically and mentally. From honking horns to constant movement, your brain is always “active.” Working from home gives you control over your environment. You decide the noise level, the pace, even the breaks, you can give yourself a little break every now and again whenever you like. That kind of control can quietly improve your balance because you’re no longer reacting to chaos all day and yes it is chaos. Working from home allows you to adjust your day around real life instead of forcing life to fit into rigid 9–5 structures. You can step away, handle something personal, and come back without the whole office watching your every move.
Also working in a mega city can be very expensive in ways you don’t even notice daily. Transport, lunch, random “let’s step out” expenses with colleagues, even buying things just because you’re outside. When you’re working from home, those small-small expenses reduce. You’re eating your own food, you’re not pressured to keep up appearances, and you’re not spending money just to function. That financial breathing space indirectly improves your work-life balance because money stress in Lagos is a big part of life stress.
