As I got back home from the conference I keep thinking about it. While I really enjoyed the first day at the conference, still I can't shake the feeling that it is a shrinking market segment.
Visual Studio used to be a premiere development IDE, I feel like those days are gone. Not only there used to be a lot more people at the conference, the age of people there is definitely close to retirement age...
Years ago the keynote speaker at VS Live was a CEO of Microsoft at the time that was Bill Gates. Today a keynote speaker was a person in charge of the Visual Studio group at Microsoft.
And he said something along the lines that we are going to be here for you as if there is a question if the product is still going to be around.
Seems like the industry in general has moved on to other products like VS Code that is a free product from Microsoft and with Artificial Intelligence Visual Studio is becoming even less relevant.
He kept saying how debugging is a differentiating feature for the Visual Studio in the marketplace. But I don't really debug anymore and let the AI agents do it for me. Who needs the best horse buggy in the age of automobile...
It is all a bit sad, but also could be a sign that writing code is soon not going to be a profession anymore. I know that I have stopped writing code, and not because my new title is a Solution Architect. But because AI is better at writing code and faster at it as well.
Things are changing and programmers are a dying breed. So I guess it is time to evolve with the changing technology once again. I am still looking forward to a second day of the Visual Studio Live, but it sure is different than it was in the past.
