Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, released in 1989, is one of those movies that gets almost everything right. It is the third Indiana Jones film, and somehow it manages to feel bigger than the first two while also being more personal. It has the massive action sequences you expect, but the relationship between Indiana Jones and his father gives the movie an emotional side that makes it stand out.

Steven Spielberg returned to direct, and once again he proves why he was one of the best blockbuster filmmakers of his generation. Spielberg knows how to make an adventure movie feel exciting without losing the characters underneath all the action. The pacing is fantastic, the set pieces are memorable, and the movie constantly moves from one location and problem to the next.

Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones, and he is just as perfect in the role as ever. Ford brings the toughness, sarcasm, intelligence, and humor that made Indy such an iconic character. He can be getting chased by Nazis one minute and making a sarcastic comment the next, and somehow it never feels forced.

The biggest addition to the cast is Sean Connery as Henry Jones Sr., Indiana’s father. Connery is absolutely fantastic. The relationship between Ford and Connery is the heart of the movie, and their chemistry is incredible. They constantly argue, annoy each other, and disagree, but you can also see that there is genuine love between them.

The supporting cast is excellent as well. Alison Doody plays Elsa Schneider, Denholm Elliott returns as Marcus Brody, and John Rhys-Davies comes back as Sallah. River Phoenix also plays the young Indiana Jones during the opening sequence, giving us a glimpse of where the character’s obsession with archaeology and adventure began.

The plot centers around the search for the Holy Grail. Indiana learns that his father has disappeared while researching the legendary artifact, so he sets out to find him. Eventually, Indy discovers that the Nazis are also searching for the Grail because they believe it can give them extraordinary power. What follows is a race across Europe filled with ancient puzzles, traps, betrayals, and plenty of Nazi punching.

One of the best things about the movie is the opening sequence with young Indy. River Phoenix does a fantastic job capturing the personality and mannerisms that would eventually become associated with Harrison Ford’s version of the character. The sequence also establishes that Indy has been getting himself into trouble since he was a kid.

Then there is the action. The Last Crusade is packed with incredible set pieces, including the motorcycle chase, the tank sequence, the escape from the castle, and the final Grail chamber. These scenes were made with practical effects and stunt work, and they still hold up remarkably well because they feel physical and dangerous.

But what really separates this movie from a lot of other adventure films is the relationship between Indy and his father. Henry Jones Sr. is not the traditional action movie father. He is an academic who is obsessed with the Grail and archaeology, and Indiana has spent much of his life feeling like his father cared more about his work than about being a parent.

Sean Connery brings a great sense of humor to the character, too. His chemistry with Ford creates some of the funniest moments in the entire series. Watching these two constantly bicker while being chased by Nazis is almost as entertaining as the actual adventure.

The movie also has that classic Spielberg ability to make history and mythology feel exciting. The Holy Grail is obviously a legendary religious artifact, but the film turns the search into a giant mystery filled with clues, ancient inscriptions, booby traps, and puzzles. It makes you feel like you are discovering the answers right alongside Indiana.

For me, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one of the rare sequels that can legitimately stand alongside the original. Raiders of the Lost Ark will always be the movie that started everything, but The Last Crusade adds more humor and emotion while delivering the same old school adventure that made the character so popular.

More than thirty five years later, this movie remains a true classic. Harrison Ford is outstanding, Sean Connery is perfect as his father, Steven Spielberg delivers one incredible sequence after another, and the story has enough heart to make it more than just another action movie. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is exactly what a great adventure film should be, and it remains one of the best films in the entire Indiana Jones franchise.
