Botanical Garden ,,Alexandru Buia,, in Craiova, Romania
Hello travelers
Botanical gardens are still a place I like to go to because I know they are all wonderful, I have visited a few so far (if I remember I have a blog posted here from one of them) and I still have many more to visit because Romania has the perfect climate for these gardens especially from early spring until late fall.
Most of the Botanical Gardens here in Romania are under the direction of important Universities that have helped to set them up for different purposes ranging from scientific to touristic purposes.
So come with me to visit the fourth largest Botanical Garden in Romania, to see what will surprise us or what we can learn from here.
Visiting the Botanical Garden is free of charge daily between 7-23, so get your comfy boots ready and let's get started because we have almost 13 hectares to walk, yes, this is the whole area that covers all this wonder.
We are ready, access to the garden is through a large iron door only half open, we chose to visit the garden a little earlier, around ten o'clock (the goal was not to be so crowded) even so, coaches full of students from different parts of Romania had already arrived here, but with patience each of us will certainly be able to enjoy the beauty of the garden to the fullest.
I love to walk in such places, green, in the air with lots of amazing smells, but also in shady places that on hot summer days keep you out of the sun.
There's so much information about the Botanical Garden that I couldn't skip this aspect so here are some of them.
Botanical Garden "Al. Buia" Botanical Garden, under the direction of the University of Craiova, was founded on the initiative and under the guidance of Prof. dr. dr. univ. Alexandru Buia in 1952, is a scientific, didactic and educational institution. He understood that there could be no higher agronomic or horticultural education without a university botanical garden.
With vast collections of great diversity, the Botanical Garden holds living biological material for fundamental and applied study and research.
Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the life of plants, their scientific, economic and cultural importance in improving the quality of life and protecting the environment.
The Botanical Garden is organized in the following sectors:
The Ornamental Sector is flat, starting from the visitors' entrance on Iancu Jianu Street, and includes 145 taxa. It provides throughout the growing season, in addition to a rich and varied collection of plants and a pleasant setting at the entrance to the Botanical Garden.
The sector Floristic Provinces of Romania, with 120 taxa, is located in the north, north-east and east of the Botanic Garden. In order to create conditions as close as possible to the ecological requirements of species from different phytogeographic regions of Romania, micro- and macro-reliefs with heights between 1.5 m and 30 m in relation to the water level of the lakes have been arranged by large earth accumulations.
The Plant Systematics sector is located in the central part of the Botanical Garden. It includes a lake which is home to aquatic plants as well as various species of birds. It is organized according to the theoretical classification system of the entire plant kingdom, developed by Al. Borza in 1925, and the plants are grouped according to scientific criteria, emphasizing the passage from lower to higher (evolution) and the descent of some groups from others (phylogeny).
The Floristic Provinces of the Globe sector comprises 1200 taxa and is located in the southwest part of the garden. It works with the following provinces: Mediterranean, Caucasian, Central Asian, Southeast Asian and North American.
The Cultivated Plants sector is located in the N-W of the Botanic Garden and contains 225 taxa. It is divided into six sections: agrophytotechnics, legumes, trees, shrubs and medicinal plants, vines and trees.
The Greenhouse sector is located near the administrative headquarters and is divided into 4 compartments: the corridor greenhouse, the succulent greenhouse, the tropical and subtropical greenhouse and the propagating greenhouse. 630 taxa are present in this sector.
The Nursery - Rosarium sector is located in the V and S-V of the garden. The nursery propagates biological planting material used by the garden sectors to replace damaged specimens.
The museum is located in the hall of the administrative building and contains samples of seeds, fruits, plates, graphs, diplomas, collections of catalogs published by the Botanical Garden since its foundation and up to the present.
Walking around I found the house of the wicked witch, hehe.
If you like to run, here in the Botanical Garden you have a dedicated running track.
