To be honest, my first reaction was, "That's a crazy amount of money!" I actually wondered if City had overpaid. After all, we're talking about a player who isn't yet one of those household names that dominate football headlines every week.
But the more I thought about it, the more I started to understand why City were willing to spend that much.
I have watched Anderson a few times over the last couple of seasons, and one thing that stands out is how mature he looks on the pitch. He is not the type of midfielder who only shines when he has the ball. He works hard, presses well, wins tackles, and always seems available for a pass. Those little things don't always make the highlight reels, but they are often what wins football matches.
What I find most impressive is that he can comfortably play in different midfield roles. Whether he's protecting the defence, helping the attack, or simply keeping possession moving, he looks comfortable. That's probably one of the biggest reasons Manchester City pushed so hard to sign him.
I also think this move shows that City are planning for the future instead of waiting until they have problems. With changes expected in their midfield over the next year or two, bringing in someone like Anderson now gives him time to settle and grow into an even better player.
Of course, the biggest challenge won't be his football ability, but it will be dealing with the pressure that comes with a £116 million price tag. Every expensive signing is judged differently. Fans expect perfection from day one, and the media are always ready to criticise if things don't go well immediately.
Personally, I don't think that's fair. Anderson did not decide his transfer fee. His responsibility is to perform, work hard, and keep improving. The price is something the clubs agreed on, not the player.
If I'm being asked to predict how this transfer will turn out, I'd say City have made a smart investment. Anderson is still only 23, and he's already showing qualities that many experienced midfielders spend years trying to develop. Under the right coaching, I honestly believe he can become one of the best midfielders in Europe.
Only time will tell whether this transfer becomes a success, but one thing is certain, and that's the fact that it has already become one of the biggest talking points of the summer. I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on Anderson this season because I'm genuinely curious to see if he can live up to the expectations.
