I followed Santos quite a bit last season, and every time I watched him play, I felt he was growing into an important player for Chelsea. He is not the kind of midfielder who grabs headlines every week, but he quietly goes about his job. He wins the ball back, keeps things moving in midfield, and is not afraid to push forward when the opportunity comes.
That said, I can understand why he decided to move. Chelsea already have plenty of quality midfielders, and breaking into the starting eleven consistently was always going to be difficult. Every young player reaches a point where they have to choose between staying and fighting for limited minutes or moving somewhere they can become a key figure. Santos has chosen the second option.
From Manchester United's point of view, I think this is a smart signing. Michael Carrick is just getting started as head coach, and bringing in a midfielder like Santos makes a lot of sense. Carrick built his playing career on intelligence, composure, and reading the game, so I can imagine he will enjoy working with someone who has similar qualities.
The reported £50 million fee might sound expensive to some fans, but that's just the reality of today's transfer market. If Santos continues improving over the next few years, people may eventually look back and say United got a good deal.
What I liked most was his first interview after completing the move. He spoke about Manchester United with real excitement and mentioned how much it means to wear the shirt.
