Hello Hives,
Today officially makes three weeks since I brought my birds home, and honestly, I’m really happy with the progress so far. 🐔❤️

The growth has been wonderful, and one thing I’m especially grateful for is that there has been no record of mortality since I started this batch. Seeing them active, eating well and getting bigger every day gives me a lot of encouragement to keep going.

Of course, their growth also means their appetite has increased. The bag of feed I bought when I brought them in is now almost finished. At first, the quantity they were eating seemed small, but these birds have grown so much that they now consume considerably more feed. That alone shows how much they have developed within just three weeks.
While they are growing, I’m also doing my best to keep them healthy using the organic methods I have chosen for this batch. It has been an interesting experience because I’m learning something new almost every day from taking care of them.
But just like every good thing, there are challenges.
One of the biggest challenges that has become more noticeable as the birds grow is the amount of droppings they produce. I mentioned this in my previous posr, but it has increased even more now. The smell can become unpleasant, and the flies around the cage have also started becoming a serious concern.
So, I decided to try something I have used before.
After cleaning the sack underneath the cage and packing away the accumulated droppings, I washed the sack properly and left it outside to dry completely. Once it was dry, I placed it back underneath the cage.
Then I took some smooth charcoal remnants and spread them across the sack underneath the birds.
I have used charcoal in the past to help with bad odour and some other situations around the farm, so I decided to try it again here. My main aim is to reduce the unpleasant smell and hopefully make the environment around the cage more manageable.
Keeping poultry is not just about feeding the birds and watching them grow. The bigger they become, the more responsibility comes with them.
Three weeks down, no mortality, good growth and plenty of lessons learned.
Let’s see what the next week brings! 💪.
