It's day four with my broiler chicks, and I'm grateful to say that I haven't recorded any mortality. Every one of them is still alive, active, and eating well. As a poultry farmer, that's always the kind of update you want to share because the first few days are very important in raising healthy birds.
I left home very early this morning for work, so I didn't get the chance to check the cage properly before leaving. When I returned home later in the day, the first thing I did was head straight to the chicks. I immediately noticed that the sack I use on the floor of the cage was already soaked with droppings and had become wet.
Leaving a wet sack inside the brooding cage is never a good idea, especially with young chicks. The weather has been quite cold, and a damp environment can easily affect their health too. I didn't waste any time before replacing it with a clean, dry one.
To make the work easier, I gently packed all the chicks into a large bowl before removing their feeders and drinkers. After that, I took out the dirty sack and spread a fresh one on the cage floor. Once everything was back in place, I returned the chicks to the cage. Within a few minutes, they were already moving around, eating, and behaving normally. Seeing them active again gave me peace of mind.
One thing I have noticed is that the droppings are becoming much more every day. I believe it's because they are growing fast and eating more feed. I'm also giving them bitter leaf and scent leaf water, which seems to make them pass waste more often. So far, they all look healthy, and I'm happy with their progress.
Instead of leaving the dirty sack until another day, I decided to wash it immediately. I know the clean one I'm using now won't stay clean for long, so it's always better to have another washed and ready. After washing it thoroughly, I hung it on the clothesline to dry quickly before the next cleaning.
This experience keeps reminding me that poultry farming is all about consistency. Small jobs like cleaning the cage on time may not seem like much, but they can make a huge difference in keeping chicks healthy. I'm thankful that the birds are doing well, and I hope they continue to grow stronger with each passing day.
