En estas vacaciones de verano he retomado nuevamente la práctica del ajedrez. Le he comentado a mi hijo Jeremías que he perdido un poco la concentración y el tiempo de reacción a las jugadas, el tiempo del reloj se me pasa como nada y luego me cuesta tomar el ritmo de las partidas que mas me gusta jugar, blitz de 5 minutos.

During these summer vacations, I’ve started playing chess again. I’ve mentioned to my son Jeremías that I’ve lost some of my concentration and my reaction time to moves; the clock runs out before I know it, and then I have a hard time getting into the rhythm of the games I like to play best—5-minute blitz.

El comienzo de esta partida me obligó a realizar algo inusual, tuve que salir con la dama para capturar un peón que se había comido a uno de los míos. Así que tuve que mover al centro y, después de un ataque con uno de los caballos negros, tuve que retroceder para comenzar todo desde el principio.

The start of this game forced me to do something unusual: I had to move my queen to capture a pawn that had taken one of mine. So I had to move to the center, and after an attack by one of the black knights, I had to retreat to start all over again.

Luego el contrario posicionó su dama en una posición bastante amenazante, al principio creí que podía manejarlo, pero no fue así. Un error básico de cálculo me dejó en apuros. Lo bueno es que pude reaccionar y colocar a la dama blanca en una posición de defensa y ataque.

Then my opponent positioned his queen in a rather threatening spot; at first I thought I could handle it, but I couldn't. A basic miscalculation put me in a tight spot. The good news is that I was able to react and position the white queen in a position where I could both defend and attack.

Ese movimiento funcionó más de lo que esperaba, pude capturar el alfil y, luego de dos movimientos del caballo, pude realizar un jaque con ataque múltiple a la dama contraria. Luego de capturar su pieza mas importante, todo fue cuestión de tiempo para posicionarme y encontrar el jaque mate. Hablando de tiempo, la partida fue realmente rápida, solo consumimos 3 minutos aproximadamente de reloj cada uno. En fin, una partida de amateur en tiempo record.

That move worked better than I expected; I was able to capture the bishop, and after two moves by the knight, I was able to deliver a check with a multiple attack on the opponent’s queen. After capturing his most important piece, it was just a matter of time before I could position myself and find the checkmate. Speaking of time, the game was really fast—we each used only about 3 minutes on the clock. All in all, an amateur game in record time.
