An immersive reading experience at the Pisogne Library together with the UICI of Brescia

What happens when we turn off our sight and rely solely on listening? "Voices in the Night" was born from this question: a unique format where readers and the audience found themselves wrapped in complete darkness, right among the shelves of the Municipal Library of Pisogne. In this suspended dimension, free from visual distractions, the words read aloud acquired an extraordinary weight and emotional strength. As the representative of the Italian Blind and Visually Impaired Union (UICI) for Valle Camonica, I strongly wanted this evening in collaboration with the Brescia section; a special thanks goes to the Municipal Administration of Pisogne for believing in the project and supporting this initiative, giving us a sensory journey centered on empathy, sharing, and true social inclusion.

The Historic Charm of Palazzo Fanzago: The Perfect Setting

Pisogne is an ancient village nestled between Lake Iseo and the beginning of Valle Camonica, a place where history can be breathed in every arcaded alley. Choosing to bring "Voices in the Night" inside the Municipal Library meant, first of all, inhabiting one of the architectural gems of the town: the suggestive Palazzo Fanzago.

This historic palace, with its rooms that today guard the community's book heritage, conveys a sense of protection and solemnity. Challenging the public to give up their sight right within these centuries-old walls created a fascinating short circuit. The high ceilings, the scent of paper, and the perception of the palace's wide spaces continued to exist in the minds of the participants, amplified by the darkness and the sound of words read aloud.

Turning Off the Lights to Turn On the Listening: How the Evening Unfolds

Welcoming people into a period hall and asking them to abandon themselves to total darkness requires trust. Before turning off the switch, I wanted to introduce the evening to prepare the audience for what would be a true sensory journey. Ours was not just a reading, but a rediscovery of the other through the voice.

The format developed through precise and intense moments:

Absolute Darkness: The library lights were completely turned off, instantly eliminating any visual point of reference and leaving room for a new dimension.
Voices in the Silence: At first, a deep, almost tangible silence was created, then broken by the words of the readers who began to fill the darkness.
Immersive Listening: Without the distraction of sight, the audience began to perceive every nuance of the voice, the movements, and even the breath of those who were reading.
Emotions in the Light: When the chandeliers turned back on, the emotion in the room was evident; the final exchange of sensations proved the deep empathy born in the dark.

The Magic of Braille and Final Thanks

The true beating heart of "Voices in the Night" was revealed right in the dark: our extraordinary visually impaired readers guided the audience by reading the texts in Braille. While for the spectators the darkness represented a temporary loss of orientation, for the readers it was the everyday space of knowledge. The light touching of fingers on the raised pages brought the stories to life, demonstrating in a concrete and touching way that culture has no physical barriers, but only different channels to express itself.

Un'esperienza di lettura immersiva alla Biblioteca di Pisogne insieme all'UICI di Brescia

Cosa succede quando spegniamo la vista e ci affidiamo solo all'ascolto? "Voci nella Notte" nasce da questa domanda: un format unico in cui i lettori e il pubblico si sono ritrovati avvolti dal buio più completo, tra gli scaffali della Biblioteca Comunale di Pisogne. In questa dimensione sospesa, priva di distrazioni visive, le parole lette ad alta voce hanno acquistato un peso e una forza emotiva straordinari. Come referente dell'Unione Italiana Ciechi ed Ipovedenti (UICI) per la Valle Camonica, ho fortemente voluto questa serata in collaborazione con la sezione di Brescia; un ringraziamento speciale va all'Amministrazione Comunale di Pisogne per aver creduto nel progetto e aver sostenuto questa iniziativa, regandoci un viaggio sensoriale incentrato sull'empatia, sulla condivisione e sulla reale inclusione sociale.

Il Fascino Storico di Palazzo Fanzago: La Cornice Perfetta

Pisogne è un borgo antico incastonato tra il Lago d'Iseo e l'inizio della Valle Camonica, un luogo dove la storia si respira in ogni vicolo porticato. Scegliere di portare "Voci nella Notte" all'interno della Biblioteca Comunale ha significato prima di tutto abitare uno dei gioielli architettonici del paese: il suggestivo Palazzo Fanzago.

Questo palazzo storico, con le sue sale che oggi custodiscono il patrimonio librario della comunità, trasmette un senso di protezione e solennità. Sfidare il pubblico a rinunciare alla vista proprio tra queste mura secolari ha creato un cortocircuito affascinante. Gli alti soffitti, il profumo della carta e la percezione degli spazi ampi del palazzo hanno continuato a esistere nella mente dei partecipanti, amplificati dall'oscurità e dal suono delle parole lette ad alta voce.

Spegnere le Luci per Accendere l'Ascolto: Come si Svolge la Serata

Accogliere le persone in una sala d'epoca e chiedere loro di abbandonarsi alla totale oscurità richiede fiducia. Prima di spegnere l'interruttore, ho voluto introdurre la serata per preparare il pubblico a quello che sarebbe stato un vero e proprio viaggio sensoriale. La nostra non è stata solo una lettura, ma una riscoperta dell'altro attraverso la voce.

Il format si è sviluppato attraverso momenti precisi e intensi:

Il Buio Assoluto: Le luci della biblioteca si sono spente del tutto, eliminando all'istante ogni punto di riferimento visivo e lasciando spazio a una dimensiona nuova.
Le Voci nel Silenzio: All'inizio si è creato un silenzio profondo, quasi tangibile, poi rotto dalle parole dei lettori che hanno iniziato a riempire l'oscurità.
L'Ascolto Immersivo: Senza la distrazione della vista, il pubblico ha iniziato a percepire ogni sfumatura della voce, i movimenti e persino il respiro di chi leggeva.
Le Emozioni alla Luce: Al riaccendersi dei lampadari, l'emozione nella sala era evidente; lo scambio di sensazioni finale ha dimostrato la profonda empatia nata al buio.

La Magia del Braille e i Ringraziamenti Finali

Il vero cuore pulsante di "Voci nella Notte" è stato svelato proprio nel buio: i nostri straordinari lettori non vedenti hanno guidato il pubblico leggendo i testi in Braille. Mentre per gli spettatori l'oscurità rappresentava una perdita temporanea di orientamento, per i lettori era lo spazio quotidiano della conoscenza. Il leggero sfiorare delle dita sulle pagine impresse ha dato vita alle storie, dimostrando in modo concreto e toccante che la cultura non ha barriere fisiche, ma solo canali diversi per esprimersi.

Un ringraziamento dal profondo del cuore va ai nostri eccezionali lettori, che con la loro sensibilità e maestria ci hanno guidato in questo viaggio.
