Something similar happened with Ronda Rousey. The fans don't want excuses, we are not stupid, if someone loses or gets a bad break we prefer the explanation a famous ex heavyweight champion Don Anjos gave when he said to the crowd "what can I say? I got beat up!" with a smile on his bruised and bloodied face... and the crowd/fans liked and respected him even MORE after that.
