Quelque chose pleurait là-dessous.

Chapter 9 – Voices of the Abyss

The sky was black—but not with night.

It was a veil. A shroud. Something ancient had opened its eyes.

The Glass Labyrinth lay behind them now, shattered like a mirror overfull with truths. The phoenix-dragon had departed, vanishing into clouds like a dream exhaled. Before the three companions stretched the yawning maw of a chasm: Khar-Duun—a name spoken only in vanished tongues, a place omitted from all maps.

It wasn’t a canyon. It was a wound.

— “This isn’t natural,” Théo whispered. “It’s a passage.”

Gabriel nodded slowly. His hand gripped Vel’Anor, and the weapon pulsed—each beat like a faint heartbeat, calling downward. Not with sound… but with intent.

Li-Mei crouched at the edge. Her fingers traced runes barely visible in the stone—ancient marks of long-lost dynasties, woven with sigils from forbidden Western orders. A convergence of bloodlines, faiths, and forgotten pacts.

— “This is a knot between worlds,” she murmured. “East and West. Mortal and beyond.”

And then, a cry rose from the abyss.

Not a voice. Not a scream.

A grief, so old and deep it bled through stone.

They descended.

The walls of Khar-Duun were obsidian veined with lightless silver. Each step downward drew them into deeper cold—not of temperature, but of memory. Frozen time.

Halfway down, the walls changed. Statues—or were they entombed bodies?—jutted from the stone. Kings. Priests. Masked scholars. All turned to watch with unblinking eyes as the three passed.

Gabriel did not speak. Nor did the others.

Some truths weigh heavier in silence.

Hours later, they reached a natural platform lit only by a single crystal embedded high above—a flickering blue beacon. At its center stood a shattered arch, and before it, a lone figure in a hooded cloak.

She spoke as one addressing the dying or the damned:

— “You come seeking the ninth fragment,” she said. “But this one was not lost. It was sealed.”

Gabriel stepped forward, cautious.

— “By whom?”

— “By the ones who forged the world,” she replied. “And then… chose to forget it.”

The hood dropped. She was an old woman, face lined with deep scars. But her eyes gleamed like twin stars—aware, eternal.

— “I am a Keeper of the Abyss,” she said. “My order guards what should never be awakened. But the seal is failing. And your presence confirms it.”

She led them to a black altar—smooth, seamless, cold. Not carved, but shaped by something not human.

— “To receive this fragment,” she said, “you must listen. Not with your ears. With your souls.”

They sat in silence.

The Keeper began to chant—no words, only resonance.

And the ground beneath them… did not tremble.

It opened. Not physically. But within.

Each of them fell—not into darkness, but into memory.

Gabriel saw himself at war. But not as he was. He stood beside a dragon, hand on its scales, tears in his eyes as he drove a blade through its heart—by its own request. He heard the dragon whisper, “End me before they use me.”

Li-Mei floated through visions of a temple high above the clouds. She watched her ancestors—jade-robed priestesses—binding their eyes with silk to better see without illusion. She saw a girl—herself?—plunging a sword into sacred fire, sealing her soul inside.

Théo saw a dozen versions of his life: one as a prince of the Cartel; one as a traitor hung for crimes; one as a child, cradling a forbidden tome. In every future, a shard appeared, and his choices spiraled around it.

When they awoke, their cheeks were wet with tears.

The Keeper stood with arms raised. Above, the crystal pulsed brilliantly.

— “You have seen. You have borne the weight. Now bear it again.”

The ninth fragment materialized, suspended above the altar—dark, quiet, and motionless.

Gabriel stepped forward and took it.

No fire. No light. Just stillness.

— “This shard grants no power,” the Keeper said. “It removes lies. It is the Shard of Silence. The reflection with no mask.”

Théo shuddered.

— “Was the Cartel born from this place?”

The woman’s eyes dimmed, almost with pity.

— “No. The Cartel is a shadow. A consequence. The true enemy… has no name. It is what we become when we stare too long at ourselves… and forget to look away.”

A tremor ran through the floor.

The Keeper stiffened.

— “You must leave. Now. The seal is weakening faster than I feared.”

— “What’s coming?”

She didn’t answer.

But behind the shattered arch, something stirred.

Something older than the Keeper.

Something that had heard their thoughts.

They didn’t speak as they ascended.

The echoes of the abyss lingered with every step. And though they emerged into the light, none of them felt free.

Something had changed.

Something had followed them.

A silence… with eyes.
