I think it is fair for a lot of us to look back at the period between the fall of the Soviet Union and the launch of the Global War on terror as a golden age of sorts. We had relative economic prosperity, little global conflict, and a sense of optimism for the future. My entire adult life has been in the shadow of terrorism, foreign war, economic recessions, and expenses outpacing my earnings.
