Continuing with my Monday #ShowOffYourHome posts, today I want to tell you about a repair I did that turned out EXCELLENT! I have to announce it as a huge achievement because, if you've seen my recent posts, nothing ever turns out the way I expect it to 🙃.
One of the things I needed to fix in my home was the front door. It turns out that it is exposed to the elements, meaning it is exposed to sun, wind, and rain every day of its life. This caused it to start chipping and lose its color and shine. To add to the damage, I once made some Christmas decorations that looked beautiful at the time, but when I removed them, all the glue remained there and it looked like anything but a secure door. Being the front door, the wear and tear was noticeable, so it was among my big plans to give this important part of my home a facelift.
Obviously, I asked for quotes, and my neighbor, who thinks you earn as much as a minister, was charging me $50 just for labor, since, apart from having to buy a gallon of Solintex matte white paint (a well-known brand in my country), 1 liter of thinner (solvent), and 5 liters of gasoline to clean the machine 😕. I had to invest twice as much in these materials.
The man who was doing the work on the counter (yes, the counter I told you about) told me he would do it. The labor cost was $15, plus the materials, which were: 1/4 of white paint, the thinner, and sandpaper. Well, yes, with that budget, I sent him to do the job.
Obviamente, pregunté por presupuestos y mi vecino que piensa que uno gana como ministro, me estaba cobrando $50 solo de mano de obra, ya que, aparte de que debía comprar un galón de pintura blanca mate Solintex (marca reconocida en mi país), 1 litro de tinner (disolvente) y 5 litros de gasolina para limpiar la máquina 😕. En estos materiales tenía que invertir el doble.
El señor que me estaba haciendo el trabajo del mesón (sí, el mesón que les conté), me dijo que él lo hacía. La mano de obra era $15, más los materiales que fueron: 1/4 de pintura blanca, el tinner y una lija. Pues, sí, con ese presupuesto, lo mandé a realizar el trabajo.
I loved it! It was a complete transformation because we went from a door with dents, scratches, and things stuck to it to a beautiful, white, clean, new door; the change was immediately noticeable.
I think these results were due to the fact that the work was not done by the gentleman himself, but by his assistant. From what I could see, he worked more on the details, delicately and very cleanly, and this was part of why the work turned out exactly as I wanted it, even better.
Unfortunately, due to the door's exposure, it was difficult to control the dust or debris in the air, but that wasn't noticeable because the white remained white.
¡Me encantó! El cambio fue de 180º porque pasamos de una puerta con picaduras, rayaduras, cosas pegadas a una puerta hermosa, blanca, limpia, nueva; el cambio se vio de inmediato.
Creo que estos resultados fue producto de que quien hizo el trabajo, no fue el señor directamente, sino su ayudante. Por lo que pude observar, trabajó más en los detalles, de manera delicada, muy limpiamente, y esto formó parte de que el trabajo quedará tal cual como yo lo quería, incluso mejor.
Lamentablemente, por la exposición de la puerta, fue difícil controlar el polvo o la basura que estaba en el aire, pero eso ni se notó, porque lo blanco quedó blanco.
What I did notice is that when I took the photos, it was clear that my door itself was upside down. At first, I almost lost my temper, but I decided to enjoy the fact that it looked beautiful. It didn't even cross my mind to fix it at that moment, because we're talking about a VERY BIG move that I would have to make to rectify it, and I'm not up for those kinds of transformations. For now, it will stay that way:

Final thoughts I was delighted with the work, because it was one of the few things I did that turned out exactly as I had planned. Although it may seem like a small thing, I am very visual, so I notice imperfections and it bothers me to “see them all the time.” Fixing my door brought me great relief from my worries about the house and did not interfere with continuing the repairs. Plus, it didn't leave any smell, and we were able to close the door that same night. We just put some Vaseline on the lock so it wouldn't stick because of the paint.
I recommend not waiting until your doors deteriorate further, because the change will be greater. Instead, with a small investment (I didn't spend even $50), you can have a new, beautiful door that will last a long time. And this advice goes for everything else in the house; these small changes help to make spaces more beautiful and well-maintained 😍. Step by step, I've been fixing everything, and now that I have six months left in the year, I'm focused on continuing to accomplish everything I set out to do to improve my home in 2025 🌟.
