On the evening of a rainy day, I was outside cooking when a thought crossed my mind. Despite losing my papa, we were still living in some level of comfort. Thankfully, he was able to achieve a few things before his passing. We own a building with tenants who pay rent, and we also run a bread factory.
His death was a big shock to us, but somehow, we survived with what he left behind. There was even a time when we suffered terribly—but that’s a story for another day.
That particular day, it was raining heavily. I was in the kitchen cooking spaghetti for my siblings and me, and a thought lingered in my mind:
"What if we had no roof over our heads? What if we were out on the streets, begging to survive? What if our house was leaking badly, and we had no money to fix it? What if this? What if that?"
And I wept—bitterly.
Why? Because I realized that in everything, we should thank God and be grateful, even for the little we have. Some people are praying and dreaming for what we have, while we are busy wishing for something else someone else owns.
Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t dream big or try to increase our wealth. What I am saying is:
Be grateful for what you have, and keep believing and working towards more.
Be thankful for what you have—because imagine how anxious you'd be if you didn't have it.
I’m thankful to have a roof over my head. I’m thankful to have a home.
We truly don’t know what others are going through. We don’t know how hard they fight to survive each day. We don’t have to be hard on people. A little kindness—being nice even when you don’t have a reason to—goes a long way. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, respecting who they are and the work they do, can brighten someone’s day, give them hope, and make them feel seen and loved.
Helping others doesn’t mean you’re foolish or naive. It makes you a better human being. It shows you have a conscience. And I believe the Good Lord sees everything—and in His time, He will reward us all.
AMEN.
