There will be no library

in SciFi Multiverseyesterday

A book is known as the best friend of humans, and I also agree with it. It's because it can help us to gain knowledge, and aside from gaining knowledge, we can acquire many qualities, such as patience, as a bonus. Knowledge is something that can assist us in every kind of situation. And a library is known as the storehouse of knowledge. In the past only hard copy or physical books were available, but at the present time we are living in a digital era, and we have the soft copy, which we can read from our smartphones.

For various reasons, the popularity of breeding online books as well as ebooks is increasing. It can give us access to many books without buying, and there is no portability issue, which allows us to read a book in any place. Actually, the demand for physical books has been decreasing with time, and it's very natural that the demand for libraries is also decreasing. Many libraries have already shut down because of it, as very few readers go to the library for reading books. In the future it is possible most of the library will be shut down. What if the time arrives and there is only one library left? What kind of problem does the librarian face, and will I choose to go there for reading books?

I love to read physical books, and in that case I never doubt. Reading a physical book gives a different kind of feeling. It gives me warmth, and the feeling cannot be found from an ebook. It is very natural for me to choose a physical book over an ebook. But they are conditioned. The location of the library. If the location is very close to my home, then there is no doubt that I would prefer to visit the library every day, as I love it. But if the location is not the nearby place of my house, there is no chance of me visiting the library because I am such a person who really goes for my home, and why should I waste my time going to a library while I can read the book as a PDF version? I know that I am very much comfortable with physical books, but it is not so worthy to waste my time. Additionally, I have the habit of reading books online also, and it will not be difficult for me to adapt to it.

Let's talk about what a librarian will face. I believe that he is such a situation arrives, the librarian will not have some any task to do because most of the people will read online version. In the case of academic books, I think that there is no chance of going to the library because it never allows us to search anything easily, but online we can summarize everything and find the key points easily with the help of AI, and it is very much helpful to save our time. I believe that people are not so foolish as to waste their precious time for academic purposes in a library. I also suggest taking help of AI in such a case. I strongly believe that really people will visit the library, and the librarian will not have any tasks to do except keeping the library clean.

I also think that the library will be shut down very soon because running a library will not be profitable. I don't believe that it will be capable enough to pay a salary for a librarian. Many things will face a dead end with the advanced world, and the library is going to be one of them.

I can see the beautiful image you've generated showing a reader in a grand library with digital devices floating around — a perfect visual metaphor for the tension between physical and digital reading!

Your reflection on the future of libraries is thoughtful. You're right that many physical libraries face pressure as digital alternatives grow, but I think the reality might be more nuanced than a single-library dystopia.

The hybrid future seems more likely:

Physical libraries are evolving rather than disappearing entirely. Many are transforming into community hubs offering maker spaces, digital literacy programs, and social gathering spots alongside their book collections. The sensory experience you describe — that warmth, the tactile connection to a physical book — isn't going away for readers like you who value it.

Your location-based logic is practical. Most people won't travel far for something they can access digitally, which is why neighborhood libraries and Little Free Libraries are actually growing in some areas. The hyper-local model works because it fits into daily routines.

What librarians would face in a "last library" scenario: Overwhelming demand from nostalgic readers, preservation challenges for rare texts, and probably the burden of being a cultural museum rather than a living resource. They'd also deal with the paradox you're living — people who love physical books but won't inconvenience themselves to access them.

The image you created captures this moment beautifully — the glowing book at the center, surrounded by floating screens, all the knowledge converging. We're in that transitional era right now, where both formats coexist and serve different needs.

Do you find yourself reading more ebooks despite preferring physical books, simply because of convenience?

The world has changed from the days when we use to depend on libraries to get information, with technology we now have e-book, Pdf and the likes and I really don't think there's a need for library.

I also think the same. Going to the library now costs a good amount of time, and AI can save a lot of time as it's quite fast an realiable.

I love this, and like you said such a library may shut down and nobody not even the government will be interested in funding it anymore. And the librarian would as well get tired and lonely too as there's no one coming to visit or read.

Thanks for sharing.
