Though, nothing has been confirmed yet, but it seems like there's real progress behind the scenes.

I can't really say I have watched Lacroix every single week, but from the matches I have seen, I believe he is a defender with qualities that suit the modern game. He is quick, strong in one-on-one situations, and looks comfortable with the ball at his feet. Those are the kind of centre-backs every top club seems to be looking for these days.
Still, if Chelsea end up paying more than £50 million, people will expect a lot from him. That's just how football works. Once a player arrives with that kind of price tag, fans don't care how long it takes to settle in, as they want performances straight away. It's a big challenge, especially at a club where every mistake is heavily criticised.
What this rumour tells me is that Chelsea are not completely satisfied with their current defensive options. Injuries have been a problem over the last couple of seasons, and there has not always been consistency at the back. Bringing in another centre-back could be the club's way of increasing competition and making sure standards stay high.
