When I saw the fixture between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, I expected Uruguay to dominate the game and possibly secure all three points. They have more experience on the world stage and plenty of quality players in their squad. However, football has a way of surprising us and there have been a lot of surprises in this world cup, and Saudi Arabia proved that once again with a spirited performance that earned them a valuable 1-1 draw.

For me, the biggest talking point from the match was the performance of Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. He was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Uruguay kept creating chances, but Al-Owais seemed determined not to let them get past him. Every time Uruguay looked close to scoring, he came up with another important save. It was one of those performances that reminds everyone how influential a goalkeeper can be.
Saudi Arabia took the lead late in the first half through Abdulelah Al-Amri. The goal came after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera could only push a header back into a dangerous area. Al-Amri reacted quickest and made no mistake. At that point, Saudi Arabia had every reason to believe they could pull off a memorable victory.
The second half was much tougher for them. Uruguay increased the pressure and attacked with greater intensity. They pushed Saudi Arabia deeper and deeper into their own half, creating several good opportunities. Despite all that pressure, Saudi Arabia continued to defend bravely and relied on Al-Owais to keep them ahead.
Eventually, the resistance was broken when Maxi Araujo scored the equaliser after another Uruguay attack. Considering Uruguay finished the match with 27 shots, it was hard to argue that they didn't deserve a goal. Still, Saudi Arabia will probably feel proud of the way they battled throughout the game.
What impressed me most was the team's fighting spirit. They never looked overwhelmed by Uruguay's reputation and stayed committed to their game plan. A point against a strong side like Uruguay could prove very important as the tournament progresses.
In the end, both teams will probably see positives from this result. Uruguay managed to avoid defeat thanks to a late goal, while Saudi Arabia showed they are capable of competing with some of the biggest teams in world football. If they continue to play with this level of determination, they could have a real chance of reaching the knockout stage.
