On High Ground

in CCH3 days ago (edited)

Being on high ground doesn’t always mean venturing into remote or hard-to-reach places.

On Madeira, it’s enough to simply follow the road west as it gently climbs into the island’s interior. In just half an hour to an hour, you find yourself on mountain plateaus above the clouds.

The space and views that open before you are hard to put into words. Photos don’t quite capture the full effect of the scene’s scale.

Yet you can clearly see the clouds drifting into the valleys, slowly and silently.

You feel like reaching out to touch them, they seem so close.

On the other side of the road, the landscape changes completely.

Open highland pastures spread across the plateau, surrounded by a sea of clouds. Silence, grass, and light overhead.

Places like this don’t ask much of you — just a little time. As you drive back down to the coast, you leave it behind up there, but it stays with you in memory.

Thank you for stopping by my blog!
