The Schools in Korea and Their Focus on Education

source

When I look at the schools life in Korea, I always feel so much surprise how much focus they put on education. From small children in kindergarten up to university level, Korean people see education as very important in their life, they value education in all levels.

In Korea, children start school very early, and their parents are always wants to make them to study hard. They go to normal school in the day, but many of them also attend hagwon (private academy) at night. They still attend extra night schools like extra lesson after lesson. Some people say it is too much, but this is one of the reasons why Korea is very strong in technology and business today.

When it comes to higher institution, Korea has some of the top universities in the world. Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University are like the big three. Many young people dream to enter these schools because it can decide their future job and success. Other colleges like KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) also focus on science and tech, making many brilliant engineers and inventors.

One thing I notice is that Korean schools are not only about books, reading too heavy, attend many theories classes but they also teach discipline and respect. Students wear uniform, they bow to teachers, and they learn to respect rules. It is part of their culture and it reflect even inside their classrooms.

Also but sometimes, it is also very stressful for the students. Many young people feel pressure because of exams and competition and even to make the family a proud one. The society expect them to succeed, and this can make life difficult. But at the same time, it also make them hardworking, keeping them strong and readily prepared for the future.

For me, I believe Korean schools show us the value of discipline, what the future can hold, the respect, and never giving up. Even though the system is tough, to be honest it produce strong minded students who later contribute to their country growth. Korea prove that when you focus on education, the whole nation can rise higher and it will help the upcoming younger ones.

I'm curious about this. As you may know, many people used to say the same about Japan. And on the surface, the Japanese school system seems to be exactly what you write about the Korean school system. But below the surface, we find that schools are pretty terrible. They don't really teach anything, they just have students memorize facts for a test. Then the extra school students go to after the main school just continues this, drilling in the facts to remember for the test and, in addition, teaching test taking tips. And....this is pretty much the entire system. Memorize like mad for a test, then forget everything you memorized and memorize new stuff for the next test. There is almost no actual learning. So what you find is when kids get to university, they don't really know anything. They have an assortment of random facts still memorized, but little actual knowledge with which to really dive into a field. So then university becomes party years, then they join a company and the company assumes they know nothing, training them from the bottom up.

Does the Korean system have a dark side like this?

Congratulations!
