Some years back when I was working with an auditing firm, we would try as much as possible to complete each client's account so as not to have any need to work during the holidays. If paradventure there happened to be an emergency on - the- holiday - work, I don't hesitate to decline availability because I don't want my holidays to be disturbed or cut short.
When I was much younger, my elder sister was working in a petrol station then as a manager. Every weekend, it's always a “one Sunday on, one Sunday off” service, I remember how happy I usually was whenever she was around any Sunday. But holidays are no no, always at work, I usually missed her presence in the family gathering and I knew she missed us too.
But then, as much as I wished she stayed back, the fact is, her job demands her presence especially at those holiday period. They need to attend to their numerous customers who are in dire need of their services at that moment. I never liked working during holidays even though I know it comes with some incentives, that, not withstanding.
Hence, fast-forward to now, I had never ever worked on holidays. This time around, not that I declined if saddle with the responsibility but my job does not demand that and I'm happy because it affords me the opportunity to savour the fun activities that come with the holiday seasons; the visitation, hosting of family and friends and outings to fun places which create beautiful memories.
However, as I grew older, I came to realize how great a sacrifice those who work on holidays put just to make others happy, feel better or get satisfied with their different act of services. Hence, when I see those who diligently and cheerfully( because positive vibes are contagious) carry out their services I don't hesitate to show appreciation in any way I could to encourage and let them know I acknowledge and see all they do. They're the unsung heroes.
I'd never worked on holidays and I don't wish to either but that is not to say I do not appreciate those who do because it's not an easy task. Working on holidays is such a priceless service that is incomparable with the incentive that goes with it, compared to what is forgone to render such sacrifice. So, to a very high esteem I acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate everyone who does.
This is my response to this week's prompt on Ladies of Hive community by @irenenavarroart.
