OLD BARN № 095 - revisited, now a house!

in Ladies of Hive14 days ago

In this world, nothing is permanent, everything is ephemeral. That includes old barns, which sometimes fall apart due to age. In one case, though, one of the barns I've catalogued in my Old Barn Project has been repurposed into a house! I was astonished when I discovered this recently while reviewing some of my old barns via online satellite imagery.

The following image shows OLD BARN № 095 as I saw it a few years ago when I added it to my collection, and the cute little house it has now become! The view on the left is a photo by me (with enhancement by Copilot™), and the view on the right is a screenshot from GoogleMaps™ "Street View" from June 2025.

as a barn, a few years ago (left) and now a cute little house! (right)

The hay door on the second level has been turned into a door opening onto a little balcony. More durable siding now graces the exterior of the building, and the old roof has been updated. The front door has been replaced and windows placed throughout. I really like how the basic structure of the barn was remodeled in such an artistic manner, keeping the charming design intact! Not only has this preserved the historical presence of the barn in this neighborhood, but it probably reduced the work the homeowners had to perform in establishing a residence! Building a new house from the ground-up would have been more expensive, too.

And, of course, seeing the above on GoogleMaps™, I had to drive down there and make my own pic, shown below... 😁 Round-trip was close to an hour, but I snagged photos of another ten barns along the way so it was a very productive trip through the countryside (I carefully planned my route ahead of time via satellite imagery).

There is also a fence along the roadside now, which wasn't there previously. Were some of the boards from the old barn were used in the construction of this fence? Maybe they pulled some of the boards before putting on the siding?

I also can't help but wonder what the inside of the house looks like. Did they keep any of the beautiful wooden walls on the interior of the house? Or did they put sheetrock or some modern paneling there, instead? I'd like to think they kept at least some of the lovely wooden walls, but I'm not going to knock on the door and ask to see inside... 😆

And it is an adorable little house! 😍 Kudos to whomever was overseeing the remodeling! If someone jingled the keys in front of me and asked, "Do you wanna live here?" I would agree to it in a heartbeat!

That would be a neat project to watch them do on one of those TV shows. One of my favorite things is watching old structures being preserved or renovated. Love watching the TV shows where they do that, like the original "This Old House" On PBS and such.

oh, yes, I've seen a few of those shows, too, and that would be interesting to see them renovate an old barn! Thanks for the comment! 😊

There is one show I will watch every now and then. Can't remember the exact name. But they take down old barns and rebuild things using the wood from them. It is pretty neat too.

Oh, this is so cute little house. I love how they still preserved the original design of the barn, and just added some touch up. I'm sure the interior will be homely.
Nice capture.

It's wonderful that one of the old barns has been converted into such a beautiful little house, and driving there to take your own photo is fantastic. Thanks for sharing your experiences, dear @thekittygirl ,

With pleasure, my friend 🤗

So interesting a remodel! It's too bad (at least from my point of view as I like rustic) that they didn't leave the siding a natural wood rather than the grey and white. It looks nice, but I think it could look better!

I also suspect that the natural wood inside is likely gone as well. It's been my experience with the houses we've had over the years, and the remodels, that people paint wood and/or cover it up with drywall-sort of like folks who put carpet over all those beautiful hardwood floors in the not so distant past!

Anyway, I'm glad it's still standing and being used. It is cute regardless! If you get inside sometime.....send pics!

Thanks for sharing @thekittygirl and have a lovely weekend! 🤗😻🌹 !LADY

More barn adventures are on the way! Stay tuned! 😁

What a transformation, the owners did a great job. Are these barns are built of timber, and what about the foundation? We're used to brick or stone buildings here, less of timber (I think)

Yes, most barns here are built of timber, and then treated with linseed oil or other things to make them a bit more weather resistant. I've seen a few stone barns, but they're more rare in this part of the world. I'm not an expert on barn foundations, but I think some are built on poured concrete slabs, for stability. Not sure about some of the older ones, though, but it's a great question! Thanks for stopping by! 😊

That is a really cool way to save an old barn! Although I imagine a lot of the old wood had to be replaced to make the structure up to code. It turned out beautiful when they were done. Very cute house!

oh, I had not thought about building codes — maybe that is why they used some of the lumber to build the fence, instead! Thanks for your comment! 😊

This is so nice! I really like how the house turned out, even though I think the color is a bit boring. These sort of projects always make me wonder: if ghosts are real, could there be ghosts of barn animals haunting such a place? btw, I really appreciate how you don't use AI in your posts. Thanks for keeping hive human!

This quite interesting. Thank you for sharing

It was a great renovation. The new paint makes it look more alive. I'm also curious what it looks like inside. 😁
