Am I Keeping My Word?

in Reflections3 days ago (edited)

Many things are valuable in life, but that value can vary from person to person. I'd argue there are things that are universally valuable. While some may think of material things, I'm referring to the intangible things that make up a person's character, such as keeping your word.

I've had numerous conversations with both of my boys about keeping their word. I want them to understand how important it is that people know what we say can be trusted. In a world full of lies, "half truths" and deception, it doesn't take much to shine a light in a world that seems to be fading from gray to black by the day. Not only is it a reflection on yourself of integrity and honesty, but for many on the receiving end it's a breath of fresh air.

I've had weeks where it's been rough and I just want to relax and watch TV, but all I find are dramas, chaos and violence. When I finally find something wholesome, like a re-run of Bob Ross painting a mountainside scene, I feel my body relax and my mind can be at peace. The break from being bombarded with negativity refreshes the body, mind and soul like a splash of fresh water to the face on a hot summer day.

I hope in time they see the benefit to this. A "yes" means yes, and a "no" means no. As life becomes more complex and we realize we can't control everything to the extent that we'd like, we can't necessarily make promises in absolutes, but we can make assurances that we will try to do something as much as it is within our power. Even though it's not a guarantee, when someone sees you make good on your word over time, even hearing conditional statements is far more reassuring than the empty promises from lying lips. As we go out and interact with people, it's a good reminder for all of us: "Am I keeping my word?"

¡Excelente reflexión! Como padre, también le enseño a mis hijos que la palabra es lo más valioso que tenemos. En un mundo con tantas mentiras, ser una persona seria y de palabra marca la diferencia. Saludos

Excellent reflection! As a father, I also teach my children that our word is the most valuable thing we have. In a world full of lies, being a serious person who keeps their word makes all the difference. Greetings

Thanks! That's great to hear you're teaching this to them as well!

The only issue I have with keeping one's word, is when situations change. Sometimes what is agreed to or what is aimed for, is no longer appropriate and should change. If we feel we can't adjust because it changes "our word" then we are potentially stuck in a pattern of failure. If new information comes to light that shifts our understanding, we should be able to shift our actions.

Very true. It's something I've had to emphasize with my kids, like when we go to a gathering at my in-laws' house. We'll tell my sons we think so and so will be there, but sometimes people get sick or something comes up, and to be prepared in case they can't make it.

I also think that at times "giving up" is the right thing to do.

Very true. Sometimes I ask myself, "Is this the hill I want to die on?" 😆

I've found that now that I am married, it is a bit harder to keep my word because times and dates aren't mine to control anymore. It drives me crazy when we are a little late to something because of my wife. In the past when I said I was going to be somewhere at a specific time that meant I was usually there five minutes early.

Yeah, that's especially hard when you're ready and someone else isn't but you can't just leave without them. Kids are the same way, and it drives me nuts, too! !LOL

Funny how I was just thinking about this recently. I am not someone who doubts a lot or is suspicious of whatever people say but I recently discovered I’m less trusting and I started to ask myself how I became like that.

Having reflected on it, I discovered it’s as a result of having people not honour their words countlessly so I’m either being extra careful, doubting or not just trusting what I’m told.

I do also understand that sometimes things do not go as planned so it could lead to anyone not sticking with what they said but overall, as you’ve rightly spoken, we need to do that which we can do within our power - honour our words.

Yeah, it's sad how skeptical we've all become because we've been lied to in the past.
