The Unbridled Creativity in A Child's Imagination

in Reflections21 hours ago

Have you ever seen a child's imagination at work and think, "Where did they come up with this idea?" It's silly, fun, entertaining, and also has a hint of genius or deviousness to it. You sit there for a moment in awe and soak in the moment. If they're your child, sometimes you can't help but be impressed and proud.

This was the case a few nights ago. My oldest son is addicted to Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2. He and his younger brother got it as a joint birthday present so they could game with us in addition my sister and brother-in-law in Oklahoma.

We had been playing for an hour or two, and I needed to take a break and get us caught up on laundry. He continued to play, but I could sense he was getting bored racing against the computer opponents.

I didn't pay much attention to what he was doing until I heard him giggling and laughing. What I saw on the screen was absolute chaos.

He had chosen lightning bolts as the only power-up in the game. That meant at any given moment, at least four or five lightning bolts were being used, hitting everyone in the race.

As if that wasn't enough, he added blue spike shells on top of that. For those who don't know, blue spike shells seek out the person furthest ahead in the race, can't be avoided, explode with a blue flash of light and knock the racer out temporarily. The game's AI will usually only give you blue spike shells if you're further behind in the race. The problem is that at any given moment, about eight to ten of these can be picked up. So, what happened next?

I see a handful of these shoot past him. They all converge on one or two targets and explode.

At one point he got hit with so many that over 60% of the screen was flashing blue.

He ended up taking fifth place, but I was impressed that he came up with this idea all by himself. Not only was it creative, but he understood how the blue spike shell works and how it would play out with multiple players using it simultaneously. I just sat there amazed for a moment, then smirked, chuckled and couldn't help but start taking pictures of what he'd done.

As we grow up, I wonder how much of that creativity we lose? Or do we even lose it? Part of me thinks it simply gets buried. We get older and put away "childish" things, and I think in the process of that we put away some of that creativity. Maybe all we need to do to tap into that creativity is "put away" the cynical adult and remember that childlike wonder we experienced.

Have you ever had a moment where you saw a child come up with something incredibly creative and were in awe of what they'd accomplished? What was it?
