How Buridan’s Donkey Paradox Taught Me the Meaning of Indecision and Wasted Time?

Today I had some new ideas that I needed to explore, and it turned out to be very important and truly wonderful to sit with yourself every day and discuss the complicated thoughts in your mind. Often, it is difficult to reach these thoughts without deep reflection and research. When you think about something and also research it, your understanding grows deeper, and your knowledge about it becomes richer. I believe that even five minutes daily can reveal so much about reality and about life itself.

The topic I wanted to think about today is Buridan’s Donkey Paradox, a concept I heard about on social media. I started researching it, and I found it very interesting. The idea is simple: a donkey stands between two identical piles of hay and cannot decide which one to eat. Because of this hesitation, it remains in its place until it starves and the same can happen with water. In short, the difficulty of choosing makes it unable to act at all.

When we connect this paradox to real life, we find many similar examples. Personally, I often find myself stuck between many tasks. I keep wondering: should I do this task or the other one? The truth is, it doesn’t always end in total failure like the donkey’s case, but I do waste a lot of time just deciding. And this wasted time is a big loss as it is one of the main results of such a dilemma. I end up feeling lost between many options, and this happens almost every day, sometimes leaving me with nothing accomplished or only with wasted hours.

This paradox actually reflects a bigger issue in life: indecision. Indecision is one of the worst enemies of a person. It happens when you want to do something new, or when you are torn between two choices. You start fearing that if you pick the first option, it might be wrong, and if you pick the second, it might also be wrong and you may regret it. This fear of regret makes you hesitate and prevents you from taking either opportunity.

Maybe the solution is to remember that absolute equality between choices doesn’t really exist 100% in real life. But here, I wanted to focus on willpower. Sometimes willpower acts unconsciously, and you end up choosing automatically without thinking too much. But in reality, even losing just a few minutes can be the main cause of this dilemma. The better solution might be to train yourself to make quicker decisions and faster comparisons. Even if the choice you make is not the best, you will have gained something important: you did not waste your time.
