Coimbra, Portugal, is known as the City of Knowledge—or the City of Students. This is because it is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, and in 2013 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The entire city is directly or indirectly immersed in the university, in learning, and in the vast student population studying in Coimbra. In addition to the University of Coimbra, there are polytechnic institutes and private schools.

Of the city’s nearly 150,000 residents, at least 40,000 are students (the University of Coimbra alone has about 25,000 students).

Throughout the year, there are two major student festivals known as Academic Festivals. One takes place in October, called the Festa das Latas, which focuses on welcoming new students (known as “freshmen”).

The other, in May, is called the Queima das Fitas (the Burning of the Ribbons). It marks the end of student life, when students bid farewell to their academic years. After this, they enter the job market; the vast majority leave the city. Others return.

The culmination of this celebration (Queima das Fitas), the highlight, is the Cortejo dos Fitados. It’s total madness; all the emotions of this ending are unleashed in the most excessive ways you can imagine.

There’s satire, there’s irreverence, and lots and lots of alcohol. The photos I’m sharing with you are from the very last Cortejo, which took place last Sunday.

In addition to this wild carnival, there are nights with concerts, as well as sports, cultural, and traditional activities. It began on May 22 and ends today—May 30.

It’s a tradition: taking a dip in the Mondego River. It’s supposed to cleanse, purify, and help a sober up a bit.
