Spring has Sprung? Right?

in HiveGarden3 months ago (edited)

Sadly, the official answer is no, but the signs of its approach are all around us. Of the four seasons, what is it about Spring that stands out to you?

For us, is there anything better than blossoms?

Their magical beauty, after a dreary cold winter, just lifts our spirits. Added to that their wonderful fragrance on the gentle breezes, with birds singing a little extra brightly, in the branches around them makes Spring our favorite season

Are all blossoms the same? No way, especially blossoms of fruit trees. Like these cherry blossoms!

We say that knowing full well we are almost certainly biased by knowing what comes from these blossoms later in the growing season. Fully tree ripened cherries are right up there at or near the top of the food chain, at least as far as yummy flavors.

Back to reality and the present, Spring has not quite sprung. Blossoms are not quite out yet. Leaves are thinking about budding out, but they are only just getting started.

Life is returning, in embryo form, but it is still life, after the dormancy of the winter months.

As much as we like all the many details of the return of Spring, the one aspect which stands above them all is the next growing season. Specifically, growing the food we need to sustain us.

New Growing Season

Our first signs of life in a new season of harvests and the resulting fresh food on our table are the sprouts of our asparagus spearing up through the soil and out into the sunlight.

They have not yet appeared, but we are anticipating seeing them in the next week or so. I'll try to get some pictures then and publish an update.

We also have the remains of the healthiest parsley plant we've ever grown in our raised bed. We noted how hardy it was as the last plant to give up to the onslaught of repeated frosts and cold weather. We were still able to harvest some for our salads up well into November.

We are hopeful there will be new growth spring up from its root base, as we did nothing to stop it and have read reports that might be possible. We certainly hope so.

What do you look forward to the most, in your part of the world, as life is returning in the Spring? What is the first plant which grows where you live?

Best wishes, until we meet again,
QT
