King Attaces (also known as Addak or Addacus), husband of Princess Cindazunda, a historical figure linked to Coimbra who unites the city, the Alano people, and Ossetia—a region located in the Caucasus on the border between Europe and Asia. Leader of the Alans, he married the Suebi princess Cindazunda, promoting peace between the peoples in the 5th century and establishing a strong connection to the region of Coimbra - Portugal. The Alans were a nomadic people of Iranian origin who participated in the great barbarian migrations during the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

King Attaces represented a crucial phase of the barbarian migrations that helped transform Roman Europe. The presence of the Alans in Portuguese territory is a little-known episode, but important for understanding the historical origins of the region.

Attaces was killed in battle around the year 418 when the Alans were defeated by the Visigoths, who were fighting as allies of Rome. After the death of King Attaces, the Alans on the Peninsula lost their autonomy and joined the Vandals, led by Genseric.

The bust of the king has been in Manuel Braga Park since 2025. It was created by sculptor Taimuraz Kazbekovitch Zangiev and symbolizes the historic union between Ossetia and Coimbra. It was donated by Russian collector Vladislav Khabliev. While visiting Coimbra, he saw the statue of Cidazunda and felt compelled to offer the bust of ADDAK to Coimbra, as they were a couple.

“From the descendants of the great Alans of the Caucasus to the glorious people of Portugal and the history of the city of Coimbra. Let us honor the memory of our ancestors, preserve ancient traditions, and pass on wisdom and knowledge to future generations. Vladislav Khabliev in collaboration with the Coimbra City Council. ADDAK – O bravo Rei Attaces
